Tuesday morning...
After rushing to find Jacob's brother we were finally on our way to the town square, I knew that if there was any news that's where we'd find it.
When we arrived at the town square I got out the car telling my siblings numerous times to stay in the car, David followed behind me.
"Holy shit" David said in complete shock.
All around us lay dead people in the exact same state as my mother and father. I wanted to cry, I wanted to grieve the death of my parents, despite everything they were still my parents and I cared for them, but now was no time for grieving.
"Okay think Elizabeth think" I said pacing back and forth. "It must be a disease of some sort, there isn't any other explanation"
"But now what're we supposed to do? Won't we all be infected?" David asks.
"Maybe not, if we can get out of town fast enough we might be okay"
"You're right, or maybe we'll find someone outside of town that knows what's going on"
"It's settled then, we'll go home pack the basics and head out of town"
"You don't mind if Jacob and I tag along? I just don't know how to handle this and you seem like you know everything"
"We've got room in the car so you guys should come. Trust me I'm not handling it well on the inside but I've got four people in that car who's trusting me to fix all this, I need to be strong for them"
David just nodded in agreement. We got back in the car and drove home. I entered the house first to cover mom and dad's bodies with a sheet, I didn't want the kids to see that again. 15 minuets passed and we were all packed, I rushed my siblings out the door where Jacob and David were waiting for us. On my way out I glanced back at my backpack laying on the table remembering what I had put in there before everything happened. I turned back and grabbed it.
"Can you drive? I'm not feeling so good" I ask David.
"Yeah, you okay?" He asks as he pulls me to the side.
"Something about all of this doesn't feel right. If it was a disease we'd all be dead but that wouldn't take all the cell servers down. No one in this town has any connection to the outside world"
"You're turning this into some conspiracy, don't overthink it, we'll get all the answers we need as soon as we get out of this town" David replies. I agree simply pushing the thought to the back of my mind for the moment. I get in the car and look down to my backpack, it's opened slightly and I see the letters individually written for me and my siblings and the mysterious box. I couldn't let go of the feeling that my parents knew something about this.
We drove for what felt like hours to reach the exit of our once boring but now blood stained town. The car ride was silent, we had no radio as all satellites in the area seemed to be down. No one knew what to say, in complete honesty we were all just freaked out, we were confused.
"What in the hell is that?" David questioned finally breaking the silence.
As we reached the exit it had all been blocked by what appeared to be a new electrical fence.
"Stay here" I said to everyone as I slowly got out the car. David and I walked together towards the fence, as we approached closer a man appeared.
"Hey!" I yelled. "Open the gate, we need to get out of here"
"I can't do that" The man replied.
"What do you mean you can't? Have you seen what's happening in this town, open the damn gate" David added.
"Due to what's happening inside your town you're all under quarantine" The man yelled as he stepped back from the two of us.
"Can you at least explain why, please" I begged him, but he began to walk away. "Don't you get it asshole, the only people left alive in this town is kids, we've seen all the parents dead bodies but no children. They'll die without anyone there to watch them"
"I'm sorry kid" The man replied as he walked into some sort of office. A few seconds later he returned with a piece of paper. "This is instructions from the government, follow them and you'll get out of this town" The man said as he wrapped the paper in a rock and threw it over the fence, David ran to get it.
"You're scared of us, aren't you?" I assume as I walk closer to the fence, the man continues to back up. "What's so scary about a few kids or do you know something we don't"
"Listen kid I need you to back up, I've been ordered that should anyone come close to this fence they're to be shot and killed"
"Ah orders, that's all I needed to hear to put all the pieces together. The government are trying to keep this thing contained within our small town, quite frankly they're willing to let all of us die in here if it means containing it, which means it's a disease after all. So even if we complete their bullshit to do list we'll never get out of this town alive. But if there's a message you'd like to give them on behave of everyone in this town, it's that we know every single tiny spot to escape, so good luck trying to contain all of us" I said backing away from the fence and getting in the car.
"Is that the list?" I ask David.
"Yeah, but what are we supposed to do with it?" David questions.
"Simple, we go back to the town square to share the news with everyone. We need to warn them that if they try and escape they'll be shot by the guards"
"How are we supposed to gather the whole town?"
"Just like Mayor Summer would, on the loud speaker through the whole town"
