I just finished changing Thomas' diaper as I grabbed the outfit we were going to bring him home in. I put the white onesie on him and put a pair of shorts over his long chubby legs. I smiled as I picked him up. Jimmy was packing the diaper bag when he turned around and grinned. "Awww, now THAT is the cutest." He walked up and grabbed Thomas from me, kissing his chubby cheeks. He held him out and looked at his onesie.
"This is such a cute outfit. Where did you get it?" I smiled as I smoothed out Thomas's hair. The onesie was white with a black tie with the words "I be on my suit and tie" I smiled. "Justin got it for us. It was shipped to the house a few days before I went into labor. I packed it into the delivery bag. Figured it was a cute onesie. Until I read the butt." Jimmy furrowed his eyebrows. "The butt? Whats the butt say?" Jimmy walked over to the bed and laid Thomas down, pulling his black and white plaid shorts down and lifting him up to look at his bottom. "Shit. Nice, Justin. Way to corrupt my son two days into his existence." He shook his head and put the shorts back on and put him on his shoulder and swayed back and forth while Thomas fought sleep. "At least the front is cute. He'll just have to wear shorts with this one. Thank God he'll outgrow this quickly."
I nodded and walked towards the diaper bag. Everything was in it and ready to go. Jimmy had already packed our things and put them in the truck, the only thing left was to take the diaper bag and Thomas and head home. I double checked the bag and then triple checked just to be sure. I put the bag on my shoulder and turned to Jimmy. "Did you bring the car seat?" He stopped rocking and walked towards me. "Well, of course. What kind of father do you think I am? Of course I brought the car seat." I looked around the room and put my hands up. "Well, where is it then?" Jimmy gave a tiny laugh and raised his eyebrows. "In the car. That's where car seats go." I put my hands to my sides and took a deep breath. I just wanted to go home. I wasn't in the mood for humor right now. "Well, do you need to go get it? Does Thomas ride in the cars eat to the truck or do we carry him out there?I don't know how to do this stuff. This is my first time." I brushed my hair back and closed my eyes. My hormones were still going crazy and I was on the verge of tears, I had no idea why. A car seat shouldn't make me this emotional.
I felt Jimmy pull me in for a hug. "Hey, it'll be fine. With Winnie, we just carried her to the car but I think this hospital has a protocol to take the child out in a car seat so I'll run out to the truck and grab it. I'll be right back, okay?" I opened my eyes and nodded. "Yes, please. Hurry. I'm ready to get home. I've had enough of hospitals for a while." Jimmy gave me a faint smile and kissed the top of my head as he handed Thomas to me. He watched me cradle him and kiss his head, smiling to himself before walking out of the room.
Thomas yawned as I paced back and forth. I watched him flutter his gorgeous eyes open and close for a few minutes before he fell asleep. "Gosh, you look so much like Jimmy its not even funny, Thomas." I smiled as he nestled into my arm and made a content sound. I walked over to the window and watched as Jimmy walked to the truck. "You've got a pretty amazing dad, I hope you know that. He would do anything for you." I laughed as I saw Jimmy struggling to get the seat out of the truck. I could see him stuff the keys into his pocket and mutter to himself. He stepped on the side step and threw himself in and yanked on the car seat. I couldn't help but laugh as he yanked and yanked on it. I watched as he finally got it out. He took it out and then kicked the door shut. I swear I saw him mouth "Son of a bitch" as he walked back towards the hospital. When he disappeared under the awning, I looked back at Thomas who was peacefully sleeping. "He took a bullet for you once and survived, never blinking an eye but you put a car seat in front of him and he turns into a stuttering, stumbling goofball." I turned away from the window and sat down in the rocking chair with my son. "You know, some kids grow up imagining that their dad is a famous hero, like Spiderman or Batman. But you and Winnie, you have an actual super hero in your dad. Except instead of a cape, he wears a tie and instead of a cool utility belt, he uses his laughter and charm. You guys are lucky. Your dad really is a hero to a lot of people. Some people don't appreciate it, but to others, he's the only bright spot in their day. He helps many, many people on a daily basis and you know what? I don't even think he realizes it. He's crazy if he doesn't, though, because he is a hero. Well, he's my hero anyways. If I wouldn't have discovered him a long time ago, I wouldn't be here and neither would you so.... If anyone ever tells you that your daddy isn't a hero, I give you full permission to kick them in the knee because they are wrong. He's my hero and he's your hero but, do me a favor and keep that between us. Your daddy gets pretty cocky sometimes."
