TWO | Sanity.
"Sit down Mae, you are being ridiculous," Gramma hummed, shuffling the tarot cards in her hands.
I turned on my heels and stared at her – really stared at her. What was ridiculous was her not freaking out like I was. I could have been murdered or worse. Yet she sat here like I had been driven by a brother. She however, merely waved off my distressed demeanour.
"You, my lovely dear, are overreacting. Perhaps he thought you were a possible future wife so he decided to play the uber," she paused with mischief in her silver eyes, "or perhaps he was a vampire and upon smelling your period decided you would be a lovely snack."
I groaned, realizing I should have never told the old woman I had finally taken the steps into womanhood this morning. She was taking this lightly, which wasn't appreciated at all. And all the trouble I went to visit her today.
"Gramma, he could have hurt me, don't you care?" I was kinda hurt at this point.
She let out a sigh, stopping her shuffling to lay three cards on the table – face up. I watched silently as she did so: The Wheel of Fortune, The Fool and The Emperor stared up at her. She gaze turned from the cards then, to me as she wore a sly smile.
"Will you take a seat?" She hummed.
My eyes instantly rolled as I did so. Gramma was always like this – "a few marbles short of a handful" mom always said. However, I didn't mind her beliefs, somehow they seemed to always perk my interest and make my heart beat wildly.
"The wheel is a fate card, you are something special my dear. Do not fear anything, it is all apart of Lady Fate's plan," she paused glancing onto the Fool, "The Fool is not a card lacking knowledge but a card of creation and a card of paths. You will hold much power in your hands, and so you will need to clear your head and open your heart and allow yourself to be filled with faith in yourself to create."
That made no sense to me and so my mouth dipped into a frown. So I had to let fate do its thing while I make my own path? What kind of fortune cookie bullshit was that? However, not wanting to argue with Gramma I nodded towards the final card: The Emperor.
"And that one?" I asked.
She picked the card up carefully, and handed it over to me. I took it confused.
"That one will be the one you will carry with you, because the Emperor acts with power and glory to get what he wants. But he will need the heart of his Empress to truly be complete."
I studied the card, the drawn man sitting in a throne decked out with jewels and a sword at his side. No doubt what she was true but why was that relevant to me? Hell, the only man in my life was Herold and I was pretty sure plants didn't have a gender.
But something about the card made me carefully slip it into my bag and keep it. Silence grew over us and I now felt oddly at ease about the whole stranger danger situation. Maybe I was starting to believe in Gramma's craziness. I snickered lowly at that.
"I assume you will be walking to meet your Egyptian friend, if so you should be leaving now," Gramma said after a while.
I looked at my phone and realized the time had flew right by. Jumping up I moved to kiss Gramma on hr cheek.
"Love you Gramma, I will visit again soon," I hummed leaning back when her hand grabbed my arm.
I froze and looked at her with curiosity. It was the first time I really noticed how old she was getting, how fragile she was. Something about her appearance was wrong, and her eyes no longer held that twinkle but they were hard.
