EIGHT | Septic.
"Long ago this world ran wild with many, many different creatures. It was chaos to put it into simple words, these creatures slaughtered one another. Because of that, a new being was created, the very first two witches were born. The twins were day and night, Nix and Kenexa. These first beings separated each creature to their own domain, their own realm. Each separated by different gates that only a witch can summon. That was the very beginning of our birth and that was when our purpose was made clear – we had to protect and guard each gate. We were destined divine gate keepers," King told us pacing back and forth as he did.
We all sat on the couches, watching him as he spoke. My eyes continued to watch his silver eyes. I was waiting for his lesson to end so I could ask him. How were we different from the others? Why did we have silver eyes? So many questions that Norman had failed to answer.
"Will we get to visit one of these gates?" Amber asked excited.
"At the end of the month we will step through the Thyme gate as a test to see how much you have learned. There, if you happen to sign a contract with one of the fae for a familiar then so be it," he replied with a shrug.
"What if we've already been there?" Hannah asked with a slight frown.
"Show-off," Amber hissed.
King showed no sign of wanting to answer her question. Merely walked over to that metal table and picked up a few of the rocks then walked back to stand in front of us. He held out a large, white rock in the palm of his hand.
"Don't worry about that now. Today, we will focus on mantras. Most specifically a simple mantra that can act as a quick, push back barrier. Watch," he ordered raising the hand with no rock.
"Borderline," he chanted loud and sharply pointing his index finger and middle finger together before making a cutting motion in front of himself.
His silver eyes glowed and sparkled as a line of light ran across the floor where he pointed. An unseen force blew air towards us as if the line itself had created a barrier and pushed back through the air. Then he waved his hand, and the line disappeared.
"You will take turns standing in front of each other and I will throw these rocks at you. To avoid being hurt I suggest you quickly learn how to draw a borderline," he told us.
My eyes widened not believing he'd really throw rocks at us yet, as Amber stood in front of the group her fingers quickly darted out as she chanted the mantra loud and quick. Her eyes glowed and sparkled as a line (fainter than King's) appeared across the ground. King threw a rock at her, but her line seemed to be successful because the rock bounced right off midair as if it had hit a wall.
Hannah was next, her line was faster and brighter than Amber's causing Amber to make a few off hand comments towards Hannah. However, it lasted shorter than Amber's causing Hannah's familiar Sakura to leap forward and catch a stone in its mouth before it hit Hannah. King accepted this, saying her lack of magic through mantras could be made up through strength with her familiar.
Owen was next, two rocks hit him in the chest before his borderline worked. His line flashed as if unstable but otherwise held up against the rocks. Crow wasn't so lucky, he was pelted with all four stones and still didn't manage to call up a borderline.
Finally it was my turn and I nervously made my way in front of the five pairs of eyes and I nervously held out my shaking hand to try and summon magic to my hands. I had done it before, I was sure I could do it again.
"Borderline!" I called using my fingers to cut through the air.
It didn't work however, no rocks were thrown at me. I looked at King with curiosity and his eyes narrowed into slits.
