TWENTY NINE | Deceived.

"I think I made a mistake," I whispered quietly.

Nora's shuffling paused, "What?"

"N-Nothing!" I replied quickly.

Her shuffling continued as I smacked myself in the forehead. I shouldn't have spoken out loud. I need to keep my darn commentary inside my head. I absolutely could not give Nora any reason to back down out of deal.

But I couldn't think of any spells that would be of use to us.

"Bishop–,"

I ignored her call. I needed to think. The toad spell was a no go, an EMP summon would do nothing, taking pain away wouldn't work here, memory peering was also a no, calling a gate wouldn't help causing flecks of light around my body wouldn't help – wait.

Wait,

Wait.

"Yes it would!" I howled feeling entirely successful, "Nora I got it!"

"And what," a hiss through the air, a dangerous hiss, "do you have?"

A scream tore through me as I stumbled back. Tripping over the cot, and smashing my head into what I assumed was a wall. My head grew woozy and I blinked as if I could possibly clear my vision.

That voice again I recognized it now! The masked man that had been at the ruined fountain. I didn't need to see his face to know it was him. I knew Norman had betrayed me but working with these people? What was he thinking?

"Spark,

Flare.

Fleck,

Snare," I called throwing my hands out.

At first nothing happened – it didn't surprise me, the spell was recited only by how I remembered Rosaline did it. Everything around me seemed to pause – Nora was waiting? The masked man was also waiting? Maybe to see if I had actually done it.

Then, like a supernova in full heat, light burst from my palms. Little stars of coloured lights shot into the air illuminating the room in a rainbow of bright colours. In the moment we all just stared – it was too beautiful to tear our gaze away.

Until reality came crashing down – we had no time to waste. Looking around my cell that even had iron bars on the front, I found nothing to help me. Only the cot to which I had flipped when I tripped over it.

Unless that was the perfect thing to save me. Glancing back at the masked man I was sure his eyes were still on the lights. Then I looked over to the cell across from me. Over to those copper eyes – Nora. My eyes narrowed as I hoped she understood my unspoken message. She nodded, which was all I could hope for, then I bunched myself up into a ball behind the flipped cot.

"She's gone!" Nora gasped loudly.

A swivel of fabric against the floor, "What?"

"She's gone you idiot. Look at her cell," Nora snapped.

A string of curses, then a jingle of keys far sweeter than any song I've heard. My cell swung open and footsteps sounded as he entered. I poked my head up and stared at the mask man who, seemed so startled he dropped his keys.

"You're here?"

The poor goon was confused. Lucky for me at least. I rocked back on my butt and bent my knees before I slammed me heels into the cot's frame. It went flying into the man – he crumbled under the metal and I scurried to grab the keys. Locking the cell behind me I hurried over to Nora's cell, unlocking it as some sort of alarm began to blare.

"We need to hurry!" Nora hissed.

I nodded taking a good look at the woman – she was no older than Norman. Maybe they were twins? I made a mental note to ask her about that later. Dark hair framed her head down to her shoulders, and her skin had a nice tan.

She was gorgeous to say the least.

"Are you going to stare or help me?" she snapped.

I took a step back and bit my lip, "Wait I can't leave without my familiar."

Those copper eyes just blinked at me.

"Are you serious?" she asked with an almost annoyed tone.

My gaze dropped to the floor and she sighed deeply.

"I forgot you're so new to our world. Familiars are connected to your soul, binded by your word. All you have to do is call him here," she explained.

"How?"

She shrugged, "That you have to figure out yourself. I'm going to summon the gate, if you're not ready by the time I'm done I'm leaving you here."

My eyes widened as panic bloomed in my chest. I needed to find Balfer now. My magic bubbled inside me, curling at my desire then spreading through my body. Balfer, were are you buddy? Magic singed the air around me as my eyes dropped to the ground. The ground around me glowed a deep black and a sort of ooze began to roll forward.

"What the h–," I gasped stepped back.

A flash of blue then, "Pi-ku!"

"Balfer!" I cried over joyed and not at all knowing how I had called him.

However, that didn't matter, as I turned I realized Nora had finished calling upon a gate. Spinning on my heels – with my hands clutching Balfer I lay eyes on what was supposed to be a gate. I was expecting a gate I knew – like the fae gate. However, this gate was scary!

It was the height of the room and large too – a rusted brass frame with a winding dragon sculpture around it. Nora was panting hard until behind me a loud bang sounded. Her eyes widened and she grabbed my arm.

"Wait!" I cried, "I don't want to go through there!"

"Nora! Do not let the Bishop escape!" Norman's voice thundered behind me and I froze.

Nora's eyes narrowed then she hissed, "Too bad."

Then, she pulled us through the scary gate and into a world of blackness. I screamed as we fell. Had she tricked me? Feeling stupid I pushed the thought away. Nora wouldn't betray my trust – she was a good witch. She was kind.

We landed on a sort of hard stone, and I rubbed my aching back. It wasn't long before figures of black surrounded us, with blazing red eyes and long, pointed fangs. My heart skipped a heart as I squeaked with fear.

"Oh look," a man emerged through the crowd and hissed, "The witch brought us a snack."

Nora huffed, running a hand through her hair as tears dripped down my face. I was wrong, she had betrayed us. I sniffled, clinging onto Balfer as my heart broke. He whined at my distress but didn't move.

"Nora," I called softly, "W-Why?"
