Beca's POV
I wake with a start, feeling the sensation of tipping over an edge. Frantically, I open my eyes and see that I'm clinging onto the smallest slither of the bed, whereas Chloe has most of it. But I can't bring myself to disturb her.
Suddenly I'm hit with an overwhelming sense of déjà vu and everything clicks into place. I was worried about being snuggled up to her at my place because I wasn't sure how she felt about me - and I was scared of figuring out how I felt about her.
But here we are. And I've finally worked out Jesse isn't who I need. It's always been Chloe.
I lift my head up to look past Chloe's body to survey the rest of the room. Aubrey's already left, so we're alone. Which is both exciting and utterly terrifying.
Chloe adjusts her position, her arm reaching out for me.
"Bec?" she mumbles, her eyes still closed.
"Yeah, I'm still here. Move up a bit please." I laugh. She's so adorable when she's not fully awake. She sleepily obliges, bringing me towards her. I keep hold of her hand, revelling in the way this all seems so natural - it seems like it's all been worth it.
Chloe smiles and opens her eyes to look at me. And despite the fact we've made eye contact countless times, I quickly realise I still haven't got used to how her gaze makes me feel. But at least now I'm not trying to suppress it or discount it as something she just happens to make everyone feel. Because, as gorgeous as she is, I doubt everyone wants to kiss her when they look at her.
I study the rest of her face, smiling as I observe the small details: the dash of freckles tracing over the bridge of her nose, the small scar on her forehead and the light blush rapidly creeping up on her cheeks. She looks almost angelic, her hair sprawled across the pillow as she lies peacefully, elegantly just-about-clad in a lacy blue nightdress that I couldn't properly see in the dark last night.
"You brought your nicest nightwear to a retreat?" I ask, my curiosity slightly interrupting the moment with a blunt question. Chloe giggles.
"It was to make me feel better about the situation," she replies briefly, flicking a couple of flyaways out of her face. "I don't wear it that often."
"Oh. Well, you should. You look beautiful," I murmur, still getting used to voicing my compliments. Chloe's smile widens, reaching up to her eyes, where slight crinkles appear.Wow, I hope I'll always be able to make her smile in this way.
"Thank you," she whispers, pecking me on the lips before sitting up. She sighs. "I guess we can't stay here forever."
"But we'll still be together when we leave the cabin..." I say as I climb out of bed. "Even if it's not always physically."
Chloe chuckles.
"I knew I was right when I pegged you as a secret romantic. I just didn't think it would be with me," Chloe states.
"Well, feelings are complicated. Half the time I'm scared to even say something, the other half I'm full speed ahead," I explain, acknowledging the way I've been so full on so quickly.
"It's okay, Bec. It means so much to me, you have no idea," she says, opening Aubrey's curtains. "You know I'm always affectionate, so it's nice to have it in return," she confesses, shyly tucking a piece of hair behind her ear as she turns back to me.
"I'm sorry for implying you'd changed, Chlo. It was just difficult to acknowledge how things stood between us." I sigh, but Chloe quickly grabs my hand.
"If we keep going over what happened, it's gonna ruin us both. We just need to move on. Together," she adds pointedly.
"Did you get that from Aubrey or something?" I joke.
"Words to that effect." She laughs. Then the words from Chloe's email hit me again. Something seems to be up with Aubrey.
"Wait. We need to help Aubrey," I say suddenly.
"What?"
"You said there was a problem, that she seemed a bit off."
"Oh. Yeah," Chloe says, then proceeds to explain what a guy named Nico said to her about the situation.
"Leave it to me," I say decisively, smiling up at her.
"You really think you'll get it out of her?" Chloe asks, her lips pursed in a dubious manner.
"Well, it's always worth a try. Besides, I care enough to be persistent: I'm stubborn as hell, we both know that."
"My hero," Chloe teases, stepping into the bathroom.-
