Chloe's POV
"We should probably head back. It's kinda damp out," Beca says, underplaying the way in which the rain is definitely no longer light.
"Really?" I step back, raising an eyebrow. "Hadn't noticed."
She rolls her eyes, holding my hand as we stumble back towards our tent.
"You know, people probably heard us shouting. Well, at least Aubrey. She hears everything," I mutter.
Well, isn't that just wonderful. She'll want to know everything.
"Great," Beca replies, then laughs a little. "I can't believe we thought we'd be without the other person here."
"Clearly you can't stay away from me." I laugh, but I'm clearly joking. I don't think I'm that desireable.
"Um, who was just saying that they didn't believe that I liked them?" she counteracts.
"Ugh, you're not gonna let that go. Okay, I was overdramatic. I just never really believe in fairytale endings. I didn't think I'd actually get what I want." This is all still some kind of daydream.
A light coming from one of the buildings attracts my attention, so I start walking towards it.
"Our tent's going to be soaked, why don't we just sneak in Aubrey's cabin? She might be asleep."
"Chlo, you know how nosy she is. If we don't find her, she'll be out finding us."
It's a fair point. But I can't shake my dream of spending the night by Beca's side. Not just with Beca, but with Beca.
"Her cabin's round here, right?"
"Yeah, I- Oh."
"What?" Beca asks, glancing up at me.
"That is Aubrey's cabin," I say, gesturing at the light.
"Well, that's not exactly ideal. We just avoid her questions, right?"
"Yes," I reply as I reach her cabin and put in the code for the door. "You know her door code is Stacie's birthday, right? Isn't that the cutest thing?"
"Oh my God, what? Does she- No. What? Really?"
I nod a little before opening the door.
"If you guys wanted me to sort out your drama, then I'd like to say I'm not interested. But I am, so-" Aubrey's voice stops as we walk through. She comes into view, launching herself off her bed to meet us. She looks Beca up and down before looking over at me. "You don't look angry. Or sad." She stops when she notices our hands locked together. "No. Way. Oh my God. You're...? Oh my God, this is amazing. I have to tell the Bellas!"
"Aubrey, it's..." Beca looks over at the clock on the desk, "1.37 in the morning. They don't care that much. None of us have used the group chat in months."
"Irrelevant. This is huge," she replies, reaching for her phone. I can't help but grin. Aubrey's making out like someone proposed.
Obviously I'd say yes. Not that Beca's asked.
Not that I'm thinking about it...
"Ugh. You know I hate attention," Beca complains, sitting down on the bed opposite Aubrey's (the one I slept in last night).
"Unless it's Chloe's," Aubrey quips, stifling a laugh as I sit down beside Beca. Beca slowly looks up at Aubrey, expressing her thoughts on the statement with a simple, unimpressed raise of an eyebrow. She glances sideways at me and a smirk forms on her face where she's trying not to smile.
"Oh God, you're gonna be a couple that becomes unbearably cute and gushy, aren't you?" Aubrey says, but I'm barely listening. Beca's half-serious, half-amused face is too cute. "Well, I'm going to sleep now. I'm guessing you'll be sharing that bed?" Aubrey checks.
I nod, knowing that I don't need to check with Beca.
"Right. But don't keep me up, some of us actually have to work in the morning."
Shit. Work. My vet school place... oh my God.
"What's wrong, babe?" Beca whispers as Aubrey turns the main light out, the small lamp on the bedside table leaving Beca as just an outline in the dark. She stands up and walks over to her bag, starting to pull off her damp t shirt in order to change into some dry clothes. I stand up too, quickly changing into a nightdress as I consider what to tell her.
"What do you mean?" I ask, doing my classic thing of denying everything.
"I saw your face drop as Aubrey spoke," she whispers as she pulls the covers back and climbs into bed. I switch off the lamp and lie down beside her, pulling the cover back over the both of us. "What's up?" She slips her arms around my waist as her face lingers inches away from mine.
"Nothing important-"
"Nuh-uh. We are not doing this again. If we want this to work, we both need to be honest with each other."
"Ugh. But I can't remember what I've already told you - my mind's blank up until I kissed you the other day. I was kinda wasted."
"Well yes I know. We waited for a solid minute on your doorstep for you to realise we needed your key to get in."
"Okay, okay, don't tell me more, I don't think I wanna know. But did I say I hit someone?"
"Chloe?" Aubrey bursts out. "You hit someone? Why?"
"My exact question," Beca comments.
"Aubrey, I thought you were sleeping."
"How do you expect me to sleep when you're rabbiting on about assaulting someone?"
"It wasn't like that," I protest. "I only slapped her because she was saying hurtful stuff. Like I deserved to die. And somehow she knew I was queer, which she also used against me."
"I'm impressed," Beca says as I trace my finger over her arm. "By the slap, not the fact she was horrible to you," she clarifies quickly.
"There was probably a better way to sort things though," Aubrey interjects.
"Oh shut up, Aubrey," Beca says - I can sense the accompanying eye roll even though it's dark. "Like you haven't done anything you regret."
There's a silence in the air.
"Whoops, guess I touched a nerve," Beca says, leaning forward to whisper in my ear. "I think there is something there, like you said. We'll figure out what it is in the morning though. You've been through a lot, so you're probably tired."
God, that's one of the things I love about her. She's always put me first. She's always cared about me. She's always acted like... a protective girlfriend?
Alright, Chloe, don't get too ahead of yourself.
"Bec, you've probably had a worse time. I've been awful to you over something that was probably based on my own issues anyway."
Beca hums softly, which I figure is her thinking it over.
"Yeah, but who takes things better? Realistically."
"You." I sigh. "I'm just the difficult one."
"Babe, don't say that," Beca replies, her breath tickling my ear. "Girl, you're amazing, just the way you are," she sings quietly, before lightly kissing my cheek. "Too much?" she asks, chuckling. "I guess we'd better say goodbye to any thoughts that Badass Beca might still be around."
I laugh out loud, then realise how loud I'm actually being. I can't help it though; Beca just makes me melt inside.
"Did she ever exist?" I whisper back.
"Well... it's a façade that I was doing well with maintaining until I got close to you," she murmurs, tapping me on the nose.
"Well, I prefer you like this anyway... as hot as Badass Beca is."
"Oh my God, it makes sense now. You were checking me out when we had to perform Toxic."
"Bec, I'm always checking you out," I tease before leaning in and tenderly kissing her on the lips. She moves closer to me, wrapping one leg around my lower body as she kisses me back.
"Guys, as much as I love you both, can you be a little quieter?" Aubrey calls out in the darkness again. "I don't need to hear every detail of your make out session."
I pull away from Beca and look over my shoulder, trying to figure out Aubrey's shape in the dark.
"Spoilsport," I reply, turning back to rest my head on Beca's chest. "Night then, Bec."
"Night, Chlo."
