Beca's POV
"Hi, um... sir?" I mumble, unsure whose exact presence I'm in, and also, why?
"Hello, I just wanted to discuss a few things with you, Beca. Thank you, Leanne." Carl nods his head at her, indicating for her to make her exit (which she does). "As you're probably aware, I work alongside DJ Khaled to really make artists at this label. But I've noticed you haven't released anything yet."Well, shit. Maybe this conversation isn't headed in a pleasant direction.
"Oh, um, yeah I haven't quite got anything finished yet."
"Is something the matter? We have plenty of producers who can help you. It's what we're paying them to do."
I sigh. It's exactly like Chloe said.
"I know, I just wanted to be able to say I made something myself."
"I understand that, I really do, it's just that in this industry, there are optimum times to release music, money is allocated for specific durations - there are deadlines. So I'd hate for you to waste your talent because no one ever got to actually hear you."
"Look," I say, unable to help myself fighting back. "I don't mean to brag, but I've achieved a lot of things on my own before, who's to say this won't work?"
Carl raises an eyebrow.
"Are you sure you definitely want that independence?" he says doubtfully.
"Yeah, I am. Look, I'll show you I can make a good song. If, in one month, I still haven't released anything, you can scrap me completely and sign someone else."
"Deal," Carl says, folding his arms. "You'd better hope your confidence pays off."
I nod, praying to God the same thing.
"You may leave now, Beca. Thank you."I quickly leave his office and return to my own floor without looking back.

It eventually gets to lunchtime, so I decide to take my break out on a bench overlooking the park with the marquee where Chloe and I went ice skating. To be honest, I was glad she was there to assist me with avoiding holding onto the sides the entire time. Because the helpless-baby-animal-clinging-on-for-dear-life look really isn't hot on me. But anyway, we had a really great time in general, not just skating. And she's melted my 'cold heart' (her words, not mine) enough that we didn't stop holding hands when we got off the ice. Do other girls do that or is our relationship just a little abnormal?
"Hey, Beca, I-"
"Jesus Christ, you weirdo!" I shout, basically jumping halfway across the park. "Sorry," I adjust my volume as I turn to Theo. "It's just, you made me jump. Again." I raise an eyebrow at him. "What did you need anyway? You'd better hope it was worth disturbing my lunch break, dude."
"I wanted to see how you were doing. We could take our lunch break together."
"Okay. And I'm doing fine," I reply unenthusiastically.
"Good. And the song...?"
"It's okay, alright? Can we please just not talk about the song, I've heard nothing else all day. I'm working on it, that's all you need to worry about."
"I was just asking," he replies, in his usual calm, almost monotonous voice. It's actually really difficult to tell if he has any emotions, to be honest. He certainly doesn't show them."How's life outside of work? Friends? Boyfriends?"
Ah, I see where this is going.
"I have a friend. Chloe. I don't need a boyfriend right now. Life is fine, thanks." I keep it short once again.
"Beca, why are you so cold with me?"
"I'm not! I'm me, what you see is what you get," I respond, sliding away from him on the bench.
"But ever since we met, it hasn't got better, it's got worse. I thought we had something."
I look at him incredulously.
"Dude, whatever we have is completely professional," I clarify as I stand up. "I'm sorry if you see it as something different, because it's always going to be a no."I really don't want to go there, but if he's still being persistent, I have to set him straight. I. Don't. Want. To. Be. With. Him.
In order to get away from him as quickly as possible, I slip into a nearby coffee shop and sit down at a table away from the window.
