My Ideal Birthday Present

9 1 2

Fifteen years ago, I was born
I was a present to my parents
Everyone was happy
The little bundle of joy spreading joy
To whoever she met

Since it is time to blow the candles,
This is my wish
I wish to be an animal
A dog, cat or rabbit would do
I would like to be an animal
That is respected and cherished

I am not asking to be drowning in gold
Or sleeping in a bed made of the finest silk

I would like to be loved for who I am
Everyone just looks at my flaws
"Look at her, she's so slow.
Is she retarded?"
"She's so fake. Kind to everyone but mean to her brother."
"She's too quiet. She needs to speak more."

I know I am not the best sister
Or the perfect daughter
The funnest classmate
The best student
No one seems to accept me
My flaws outshine me
You hate my flaws, right?
I hate them too
Why do you think my self respect
Is lower than Antarctica?

I am not stupid
I can see your lies
Gouge your eyes if you wish to
Be the most convincing liar
I dare you

Everyone thinks I am gullible
Just because I am slightly dyslexic
I know how harsh the world can be
You do not need to remind me
You are humans
Not tape recorders

Even before I was born,
Somebody,
Somewhere,
A stranger,
Wished I was dead
Said the world is too populated
Said I would contribute to the trash
You got your wish dear stranger
I am polluted,
This person who weighs 56 kilograms
And 1.56 metres tall is
Generously donating to the darkness
That everyone is whining about
But not willing to change

So please, let me transform into an animal
That way I know I finally have the recognition I have always yearned for
Call me narcissistic
Or say I am already a mammal
But this is what I wished for my birthday
I cannot change the past
