I sit with my back straight, directly opposite from Melissa, immensely glad that I haven't been sat across from Beta. I'm annoyed that I wasn't informed that he would be here, before I agreed to come, as he's always had it out for me. Melissa and Alex seem to know that he dislikes me, as they never ask me over when he's around.
"So, how's your schooling going, Violet?" Melissa interrupts the deathly silence that surrounds the table as I play with my food.
"Oh. Fine, I guess. Still beating Alex in math!" I grin.
"Hey!" Alex nudges me in the ribs from his seat beside me, his plate already empty. The opposite of my own. "At least I can spell!"
"Do you still have problems with that, Violet?" Beta speaks up. By his conflicted expression, he seems to think that there is more behind it then there really is.
"They're better than they used to be," I mutter, causing Alex to laugh.
"You're still as bad as you always were." Alex comments.
"Shut up."
"I'm sure your father wouldn't appreciate your unladylike behaviour," Beta says, and I already know that he's going to tell father later. "I would believe your mate wouldn't either. We all hope that you'll... settle down once you find him."
I smile inwardly, as I already know that isn't the case. I stay silent, for once knowing my place, as Alex should be the one to tell his own parents. Although, he didn't exactly leave me to make my own choices. But I guess he knew that I wouldn't have ever told father by choice...
"Well, I guess that we'll see," I respond coldly.
"Yes, we will," Beta says, his tone equally icy.
"Or I could just say whether I appreciate said actions or not." Alex comments.
Melissa's eyes light up in realisation immediately, but she doesn't say anything. She never joins in on the conversations that are between her son and husband. I guess many would say that 'she knows her place.'
On the other hand, Beta doesn't seem to have a clue to Alex's intentions, as he says, "Oh, but you've grown up around her. Her mate could be someone more mature, and probably won't like her immaturity."
I try to stifle my laughter, but end up snorting. Beta looks at me distastefully and Alex grins at me, but successfully holds in his own laughter. Even Melissa seems slightly amused.
"I will assume that you haven't met your mate yet, by how you seem to carry yourself, Violet," Beta says, and then his tone warms as he looks to his son, "You've been more confident lately, Alex. Anything you haven't told us?"
"Actually, Dad, I meant to tell you tonight that I found my mate a couple of days ago."
Melissa's expression doesn't change, but Beta's lights up. His smile reminds me of Alex's in a lot of ways, but although Alex is a spitting image of his father, their personalities are complete contrasts.
"Oh, that's absolutely great, son! I knew that you'd meet her soon, it was only a matter of time. Is she pretty?" I look to Beta in disdain as that is the first question he asks.
"I'd say so. She's pretty casual in her clothing, though." Alex replies.
"Nothing wrong with a practical girl." Beta replies. Well, that's a first from him. He always tells me to be more ladylike, and so does father, actually. "I guess that means that you got over your childish crush, then?"
I cock my eyebrow up in surprise, as I hadn't realised that Alex had actually told anyone that he'd liked me before this. Wouldn't he have disapproved? Actually, maybe that's why Beta began to dislike me so much.
"Not Exactly." Alex smiles, as I begin to play with my food once again, "Violet is my mate."
Melissa, who already realised and has processed this new information smiles slightly, nodding. Beta's eyes turn dark, as his eyebrows raise in shock, his mouth open. He's dumbfounded.
However, he has no time to react to this situation as a man, who I recognise as a Gamma, although the name has been forgotten, pushes open the door, it swinging wide with a loud, 'BANG'.
Beta stands up, irritated, "I am having a family conversation."
"I'm sorry, Beta. But they've attacked." Everyone on the table's faces pale, except my own. Dammit, why does everyone leave me out of everything?
He begins to walk, and Alex stands up to follow him. I do the same.
"What are you doing, Vi?"
"I'm coming too."
"No, you aren't."
"You can't stop me," I say, and begin to bring my wrist up to my mouth.
Suddenly, I can't, as Alex rushes across the room, grabs my arm, and the other one as well. He holds them behind my back, and tells his father, "Just go on without me, they'll be gone by now. Be careful."
Beta frowns, "You may be the one who needs to be more careful." He shuts the door, and Melissa begins to clear the table. Alex continues to hold my arms behind my back, as he drags me into the back room of the house.
He shoves me onto the couch, and I see this as my chance. However, the perceptive boy saw it coming, and sits down next to me, holding my arms.
"Dammit, Alex, why can't I go?" I yell and try to twist my head to my wrist, my long brown hair dragging across the surface of the couch as soon as I tilt my head downwards.
"It's unsafe. You don't understand, you've never seen the world. Also, stop that, you'll break your neck." He says.
I give up on trying to catch my wrist and glare at him. "And no one will ever let me see any of it, as I just have to stay safe, inside, ready to bear your children!" I spit, bitterly.
"That's not what I bloody mean, Vi!" He's practically yelling. "It's that you need to have practised doing anything!"
"NO ONE WILL EVER LET ME!" I yell back.
He brings his mouth to my ear, and the feeling of his warm breath on the side of my face makes me shudder, "I will." His voice is less than a whisper.
"Father won't let you," I reply in an average tone.
"Be quiet. If Mum hears, she'll probably have to be responsible and report it. Anyway, as long as he doesn't suspect anything, I won't be told any Alpha command. I don't need permission to do everything."
As he continues to tell me how we'll pull it off, my heart beats with excitement, and I feel extreme impatience for tonight.
