Chapter 46:
"It's too bad we can't go somewhere," Katniss says wistfully. A smile pops on my face, "Who says we can't?"
We take our shower, and get dressed. When we finished getting ready, we order some food, grab some blankets, and head up to the roof for a picnic. A daylong picnic in the flower garden that tinkles with wind chimes. We eat. We lie in the sun. While Katniss is breaking off vines and practicing knots and weaving nets, I'm sketching Katniss. We make up a game with the force field that surrounds the roof -- one of us throws an apple into it and the other person has to catch it.
No one bothers us. By late afternoon, Katniss lies with her head in my lap, while I "practice making knots" in her hair, she's making a crown of flowers. After a while my hands go still. "What?" Katniss asks. Starting to get tense.
"I wish I could freeze this moment, right here, right now, and live in it forever," I say. She relax's a bit, "Me too, hun."I go back to playing with her hair, as she falls asleep. I love this girl! I love her with all my heart! I'm going to protect in the arena. We WILL make it to the end! I see the sunset on the skyline of the Capitol, so I decide to wake Katniss to see it together. "I didn't think you'd want to miss it," I say. She sits up and cuddles into my chest, allowing me to wrap my arms around her, "Awwwe! Thanks, babe!" She coos while giving me a kiss on the lips.
We don't go and join the others for dinner, and no one summons us. "I'm glad. I'm tired of making everyone around me miserable," I say. "Everybody crying. Or Haymitch..." I don't even need to go on.
We stay on the roof until bedtime and then quietly slip down to our room without encountering anyone. The next morning, we're roused by both of our prep teams. They don't even flinch at the sight of us sleeping together, but for Octavia, she can't handle it and bursts into tears right away. "You remember what Cinna told us," Venia says fiercely.
Octavia nods and goes out sobbing.
I don't have to return to my room for prep, so they start setting us up. Katniss and I hold hands as we get prepped. The usual chatter has been suspended. In fact, there's little talk at all, other than to have me raise my chin or comment on Katniss's makeup technique. Flavius starts crying while cutting Katniss's hair and is given a look as in to leave, my stylest's are perfect. Not sheading a tear. Soon, Cinna and Portia come in to finish us off and let the prep teams go.
"So what are we wearing tonight?" Katniss asks, eyeing the garment bag. "Actually....." He unzips the bag revealing the wedding dress Katniss wore for the photo shoot. Heavy white silk with a low neckline and tight waist and sleeves that fall from her wrists to the floor. And pearls are everywhere. Stitched into the dress and in ropes at her throat and forming the crown for the veil.
Her wedding dress is her interview dress.
