Chapter 31:
I hold Katniss in my arms. "We'll write letters." I tell her, as she stares out the window unblinking. All she does is nod, and leaves my side going straight to her room. I don't follow her, I need to give her time. In a matter of hours, its time to go have dinner. I try to make conversation with Effie, "I love your new hair, Effie."
"Thank you. I had it specially done to match Katniss's pin. I was thinking we might get you a golden ankle band and maybe Haymitch a gold bracelet or something so we could all look like a team." Says Effie."Shall we go watch a recap of the reapings?" Says Effie. So I leave the room to retrieve my notebook of the remaining live victors. Finnick gets picked, but he doesn't come forward. He's not there. That means he's either still on the train or he never got back or he died. "Finnick? Finnick?" The announcer person repeats. Everyone looks around for him but he's not there. Then out of no where he shows, taking his place on the stage. The girl from his district is quickly replaced by an eighty-year-old who needs a cane to walk to the stage. I watch the rest of the tributes get picked. When it's over, Haymitch and Effie say their good-nights, and head off to bed.
I sit with Katniss ripping the pages off the people who wheren't picked, out of my book. "You should get some sleep, Kat--" I start but, "I can't handle the nightmares, not without you. They've been worse since the train..." She says, trailing off. I frown, looking back to the TV. A Capitol attendant brings us a cup of warm milk that has a bit of hunny and spice. It's delicious! We think about watching Haymitch's Quarter video, but decide not to, it wouldn't be fair to him.
"I don't care if you watch it..." We jolt around and see Haymitch standing there behind us with a bottle of wine in his hand. We pop in the tape and fast-forward to the start of the Games. Katniss see's one of her mothers friends, who turns out to be be Mayor Undersee's wife's twin sister.
Haymitch ends up winning by using a trench with a force field like power at the bottom that sends whatever is dropped on or touched by it, flying back out to the top. That is also how he won, the girl he was fighting against threw her ax at him, it missed and went flying down the trench, leaving both weaponless. She probably thought she could out-live him, when suddenly the ax comes flying back out, burying itself in her head. The cannon sounds, her bodies removed, and the music plays announcing Haymitch's win.
I never relized how Haymitch ever could have won, and now I do!
I say good-night to Haymitch, and look at Katniss with an "are you coming" look, and head to my room.
