SIF'S GOLDEN HAIR

In ancient Norse culture, it was very important for free woman to have long hair and it was a symbol of their status. In ancient Iceland it was illegal for a free woman to have short hair. So that's why it was such an insult when Loki stole Sif's hair.

It all started one night when Loki was bored. He had decided to place a prank on Thor's wife, Sif. When Thor found out it was Loki who did it, the god of thunder almost killed him.

However Loki offered a deal: if Thor let him go, Loki would give astonishing gifts to the gods and Sif's hair would grow back.

Loki went to a group of dwarves to make the gifts. The dwarves made Sif's golden wig which grew like real hair, Frey's ship Skidbladnir which could fit all the Aesir gods and fold into a tiny scarf, and Odin's magical spear Gungir.

For some odd reason, Loki wagered another pair of dwarfs that they could not beat the other three gifts. If Loki were to lose, he would lose his head. The two dwarf brothers made the golden boar Gullinbursti for Frey, a gold ring named Draupnir for Odin, and Thor's famous hammer Mjolnir.

When Loki gave his gifts to the gods, the two dwarf brothers also gave their gifts.

The gods declared the dwarves had won and Loki ran for his life. When Thor caught him Loki argued that he could never give his head without his neck (which was not part of the deal). So thus, Loki lived and the gods gained their most prized possessions.
