In an unknown city, where a king and queen have three daughters, the youngest girl, who was named Psyche, was known for her almost ethereal beauty. Psyche is said to have been such a beauty that the entire kingdom was in awe of her appearance and thought she must be a human reincarnation of the goddess, Venus (who is the equivalent to the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite).
The people of the kingdom believe that Psyche is actually the reincarnation of Venus so much that they begin to neglect worshipping Venus in favour of worshipping Psyche, which leaves the Roman goddess of love and beauty very displeased.
Determined to ruin Psyche and make the people go back to worshipping her, Venus forms a plan and tells her son, Cupid, god of Love, to have Psyche fall in love with someone who she will need to disappear with from society in order to be with them.
Meanwhile, Psyche's parents are determined to have her married off. Both of her sisters already have husbands, and so her father, eventually becoming fed up with Psyche's hard to please nature, decides to go to the Oracle to ask for advice on what to do. He even goes as far as to boldly ask the Oracle to set up a marriage for his daughter.
The Oracle tells him that his son-in-law will not be human, instead he will be a fiery, frightful beast that even Jupiter himself (also known as Zeus in Greek mythology) fears.
Psyche's family clothe her in wedding/funeral attire and have a morbid march up to the top of a mountain where they leave her to await her beast of a husband.
Instead, the west wind, Zephyr, comes along and whisks her off the mountain, down into a beautiful meadow. Pysche decides to wander and take in her surroundings, where she discovers a large, equally beautiful palace.
When she enters the palace, Psyche is told by an invisible, disembodied voice that echoes throughout it that this is her home now, it belongs to her. The voice also suggest that she take a bath and go to bed, which she does.
However, that night, Psyche awakes in the darkness of her room to another voice, only this one isn't as disembodied as the previous one. She can't see who the voice belongs to because it's too dark, but it tells her that he's her husband.
Psyche and her husband have sex that night, and while she can feel his body, she still can't see his face. When she wakes in the morning, she's all alone once again.
This continues to happen for a few nights in a row, where her mysterious husband will appear at night, she will hear his voice but not see his face, they will have sex, and in the morning, Psyche will wake up alone.
However, one night, Psyche's husband comes to her again, but with an important message. He tells her that her sisters have learned of her supposed 'death' and will go to the mountain where the people she loved left her to die, to pay their respects.
