THE TWELVE LABOURS OF HERCULES

A famous hero known for being the half-human, half-god son of the god Jupiter and the mortal Alcemene, Hercules was most recognised for completeing twelve near impossible tasks. He was given these tasks to undergo after he killed his wife and children (driven mad by the goddess Juno), and he went to the oracle at Delphi and, praying to the god Apollo, he was told to serve the king of Mycenae, his cousin, Eurystheus. These series of adventures are more commonly known as the Twelve Labours of Hercules, and they were carried out over twelve years at the service of King Eurystheus.

Originally, the king had ordered Hercules to complete ten labours, but he did not recognise two of them for Hercules had help in both. In the slaying of Lernaean Hydra, Hercules' nephew and charioteer* came to his aid. The Cleansing of Aegus was another task not recognised because Hercules accepted payment for the labour. So, King Eurystheus set two more tasks for his cousin.

The Twelve Labours of Hercules were:

1.) Slay the Nemean Lion

2.) Slay the nine-headed Lernaean Hydra

3.) Capture the Ceryneian Hind

4.) Capture the Erymanthian Boar

5.) Clean the Augean stables in a single day

6.) Slay the Stymphalian bulls

7.) Capture the Cretan Bull

8.) Steal the Mares of Diomedes

9.) Obtain the girdle of Hippolyta

10.) Obtain the cattle of the monster Geryon

11.) Steal the apples of Hesperides

12.) Capture and bring back Cerberus

Once he had completed the twelve labours, one source claims Hercules proceeded to join Jason and the Agronauts in the search for the Golden Fleece, but Herodorus denies this and claims Hercules did not sail with the Agronauts. Another says that Hercules did journey with the Agronauts, but did not travel as far as Colchis.
