XIBALBA
In Aztec (and Mayan) culture, Xibalba [zee-bal-ba] is known to be the Underworld of Mythology. Xibalba roughly translates to "place of fear" or "place of fright" due to the fact that it caused a large amount of fear to be sent through the bodies of the Aztecs (and the Mayans).
Xibalba was not a place that could be avoided, people rarely escaped Xibalba unless they died in different circumstances that would take them to Tamoanchán (though people would still have to cross through Xibalba to make it there; see Tamoanchán for more details). Contrary to the belief system of most religions and mythologies, a person could not avoid Xibalba by being a 'good person'.
Xibalba was a place that had its own landscape, monsters, and gods. There are many myths that take place within the land of Xibalba, such as The Hero Twins (chapter coming soon!).
Xibalba contained many things such as trials and tricks for those who entered the land; for example, the roads there would contain things such as a rivers filled with scorpions, blood, and pus. Upon passing these many trials, tests, and challenges inhabitants of Xibalba would find the council of the Lords. There were realistic mannequins placed near the seats of the Lords to confuse those who came close.
The Lords of Xibalba were often given domain over human suffering, they were able to cause sickness, starvation, fear, destituimos, pain, and even death; they would humiliate the people who traveled through Xibalba before putting them through a horrifying test and they often worked in pairs.

The downfall of Xibalba occurred when the Hero Twins managed to outsmart the gods, the status of Xibalba and its Lords remains unknown...though it seems to have continued to be the dark, dreadful place known as the underworld.
