Pearl promised never to walk home wearing the same sandals again as she soothed her feet under the outdoor spigot.

She tiptoed up the side stairs to avoid waking up her parents and causing trouble as new tenants to the landlords living below.

A young woman in a white dress sat at the top step. Eager to get to her bed, Pearl thought nothing of it and greeted her with a polite nod in passing.

At breakfast, Pearl mentioned seeing the landlords’ daughter last night. Her father told her not to make jokes for the landlords don't have any daughters.
