Harleen walked slowly through the entrance and down the hall. Just like every single day. For some reason it was darker now, more ominous. Maybe due to what was about to happen.
Her breath hitched in nervousness when the receptionist came into view. She would work the night shift, usually arriving to work when Harleen would leave. The doe-eyed receptionist glanced ahead and her eyes met Harleen's while Johnny stayed behind, in the shadows.
"Dr. Quinzel?" The receptionist smiled, putting down the clipboard she held. "It's 1 in the morning, what are you doing here?" There was genuine concern in her voice and the doctor couldn't help the pity she felt for her. For what was about to happen to her.
"My pager went off, which is weird. I think it's a problem with the switchboard. It happens every so often," Harleen shrugged. "I just gotta go back there and reset it."
The receptionist buzzed her in and giggled. "I'm sorry to hear that, must be terrible having to come out here this late at night."
"It's really not a problem, part of the job requirement, I guess." Harleen fake chuckled, watching as the receptionist turned turned back to face her computer. Now was the perfect opportunity. It would be quick and easy, both for her and the poor receptionist who was here at the wrong place and time. She didn't allow herself to think, quickly removing her gun, aiming it at the back of the receptionists head. Before she pulled the trigger, she felt her aim falter. She couldn't do it.
"Dr. Quinzel? Dr. Arkham wanted to see you, apparently one of your patients passed away earlier today..you didn't follow proper protocol apparently. Oh Whatever! You never know what typ'a drugs these people are even on when they get here. Don't blame yourself! It's that new girl..." The receptionist scoffed, as she began to turn around to face Harleen.
And in that instant, Harleen couldn't afford to waste another second. She squeezed the trigger and the receptionist collapsed to the floor.
Before she could process her actions, a realization hit her like a train. Her head shot up at the camera pointed right at her.
"Shit!" She cursed under her breath but at that point, Johnny was beside her.
He glanced up to what she was looking at hysterically.
"Oh..that? Nah, Marx disabled all surveillance systems on our way here. He's our techie, and probably one of Mister J's most favorite guys." He explained as he began to walk back into the hall with Dr. Quinzel. At this point, they would encounter guards and armed officers securing the perimeters. But as they neared a large set of metal doors, they could hear gunfire. Men shouting.
Harleen was taken aback by the commotion and gasped as she stopped in her tracks but Johnny kept trudging forward, pushing her along with him.
"Come on, princess. Now isn't the time to pussy out." He rolled his eyes as he placed an ear on the door, listening intently. He could hear the gunfire had ceased briefly. Turning to Harleen, he nodded his head.
He reached inside his pocket and took out a mask.
It was adorned with jester makeup and beads all over it. Harleen looked at it before putting it on. It was a smart move, they would have easily recognized her.Johnny wasted no time putting on a mask for himself, a Batman mask, and burst through the doors. Harleen stayed secure behind him as he opened fire, laying all the guards flat on the ground.
Moments later, they stepped over their bodies and proceeded to walk through the corridors where patients stared wide eyed at the ascending duo. There was fear and shock in their eyes, but they mostly couldn't comprehend the goings-on anyway.
"Where is he?" Johnny questioned Harleen as the rest of Jokers men assembled around them, armed heavily with guns and weapons of all kinds.
"The level right beneath us. That's where my office and the medics are. I have a private entrance from the back, no security." She whispered and proceeded to lead the way. Luckily the entire way was dark and free of security.
And since the cameras had been disabled, they moved quickly down with no suspicion despite the gun fire. The walls were thick too, no sound was heard.Once Harleen peeked her head out from the entrance of the staircase, she instructed the men to follow her to her office. She quickly shut the door behind them, taking a deep breath.
"Okay, we're safe here." She said as she walked to her desk, picking up some files.
"What are we doing here?" Johnny asked.
"Mister J is located three cells down to the left. There are three guards on either side of the hall." Harleen explained.
"That's fine, you lure the first three in here, we'll take care of the rest." Johnny instructed to which Harleen nodded.
She slowly exited the room and walked down the hall to where the three guards stood. She caught their attention and only one of them turned to face her completely."Dr. Quinzel? What are you doing here?" He asked suspiciously.
"I came in to reset my pager, it was going off at home. But as soon as I got to my office, I could have sworn I saw some movement in there...can you guys take a look at it?" She asked.
"I'll check it out," the guard said as he began to walk.
"No! I need all three of you on this, it might be serious. Dr. Arkham has told me it's policy to have all guards of a particular wing to disable anyone and anything that's a potential threat." Harleen explained.
"I don't remember anything like that.." the guard said confused.
"I guess someone didn't read the handbook..." Harleen raised a brow. "We take our job and our safety very seriously around here, if you can't abide by simple code, then-"
"No no, I forgot," the guard lied. He hadn't read the handbook at all. "Uh, guys? Let's go check this thing out." The other men nodded and proceeded to walk ahead of Harleen, who had a smirk on her face. As soon as they began to open the door of her office, three bullets flew from three different directions and they dropped dead on the floor
Harleen gasped at the thud their bodies made and she looked up ahead to see Johnny holding his gun to his side.
"That was way too easy." Johnny smirked.
"Now what?" Harleen asked.
"Now, you lead us to mister J," Johnny said as he raised his gun to her head.
