Carrie practically ran into her mother's arms as soon as she spotted her family being escorted backstage by a security guard. "Mama!"
"Oh Care," Carole took her grown up daughter into her embrace. "I've missed you so much."
"I've missed you way more," Carrie clung to her mom, happy tears filling her eyes. She pulled away from her mother, immediately hugging her father who was beside her. "I missed you too, Dad!"
"We are so glad to have you home for a bit, Care bear," he rubbed her back lovingly.
Carrie went on to hug her sisters, nieces, and nephews while Mike and Charlotte slowly came up behind Carrie. Carole couldn't help but grin, already falling in love with the absolutely beautiful blonde teenager. "And you must be Charlotte," Carole remarked.
"Yes," Charlotte nodded hesitantly.
Carole immediately took the younger blonde into her arms as well before pulling away. "I'm your Grandma Carole."
"It's so nice to meet you," Charlotte gave a nervous smile.
"Don't think I forgot about you, Mike," Carole said, going over and hugging Mike. "It's so good to finally see you again. It's been way too long."
"You're telling me," he laughed.
Carrie stepped away from her nieces and nephews after realizing that the two most important people in her life were meeting her family for the first time. "Everybody, this is Charlotte, and hopefully you all remember Mike."
"God, I knew you guys were going to make good looking kids but I didn't know they were going to look that good," Carrie's sister Shanna remarked. "Carrie, she is beautiful!"
"Thank you," Charlotte chuckled nervously as she turn a light shade of red.
After the show in Tulsa, the Underwood family made their way back to Checotah along with Carrie, Charlotte, and Mike where they would stay there for three days. The first night, everyone met for dinner at Stephan and Carole's house. Throughout dinner, everything seemed to be going fine. Everyone was catching up with each other, laughing, and having a good time. It wasn't until Carrie's parents and sisters started questioning Mike and Charlotte that it started to get awkward.
"So Mike, aren't you still in hockey season?" Shanna asked.
"Yes, we have a few days off before playoffs though so I was able to make it down here," Mike nodded.
"Hopefully Charlotte hasn't missed much school for this trip," Shanna commented.
"Actually, she isn't missing any school. She's been doing school online while she's been out on the road with me," Carrie told her sister. Her family was always so concerned about everyone's education. After all, both of her sisters and her mother were school teachers.
"She's been out on the road with you this whole time?" Carole's eyes widened.
"Mhm," Carrie's voice squeaked as she nodded her head. She failed to mention that to her mother on the phone whenever she called. She knew her mom and sisters would judge Carrie, Mike, and Charlotte for taking her out of public school. "Just for the last month or so."
"Interesting choice," Shanna remarked.
"Shanna," Stephanie scolded her older sister.
"Can we just talk about something else?" Carrie asked, putting the conversation to rest for the time being.
The rest of dinner was quiet and awkward. Everyone was trying to make short conversation, but Carrie refused to contribute to the conversation. Charlotte was as red as a tomato from being the subject of a touchy conversation that she didn't understand why it was so touchy. She felt bad for her mom, noticing that she had lost her appetite and was just moving the food around that was on her plate with her fork.
After dinner, Charlotte made her way upstairs to shower and get ready for bed. Mike sat in the living room with Carrie's in-laws and her dad while Carrie helped her mother and sisters do the dishes.
"So Charlotte's been out on the road with you," Carole recalled their conversation from earlier.
"We already had this conversation, mom," Carrie rolled her eyes.
"We didn't discuss it fully though," Carole replied. "I just don't understand why she hasn't been staying with Mike in Nashville."
"Mike's been on and off the road with games as well. Her going on the road with me is really more consistent than if she were to stay home," Carrie defended.
"But to make her do online school has to be hard on her. What about her friends? A social life? She isn't able to be involved at all when she's stuck doing homework on a computer in a bus," Shanna remarked.
"This is actually the happiest she's been in a while. She was being bullied and that's exactly why we took her out. I'm not saying that her being homeschooled it a permanent thing but for right now, this is what makes her happy," Carrie explained.
"We are so sorry to hear that, Care," Carole sympathized. "We honestly had no idea."
"It's okay. I was just hesitant to tell you guys because I know how judgy you guys can be when it comes to school and me being a parent," Carrie admitted.
"Well, from what Mike's been saying you should be nothing but proud with how you've done with Miss Charlotte," Carrie's dad Stephen interrupted the girls' conversation as he entered the kitchen. "According to him, Carrie's been the best mother that he could possibly imagine Charlotte having. We should all be very proud of her. She has come a long way."
Carrie's face lit up as she turned towards her father, unable to not beam with joy. She went into her father's embrace, suddenly feeling more at ease. "Thank you, Daddy."
"I should probably go up and check on Charlotte," Carrie said, happy that the subject had been put to rest. She hugged and kissed her parents and sisters goodnight before heading upstairs to join her boyfriend and daughter upstairs.
"All ready for bed?" Carrie asked as she entered her childhood bedroom where her and her daughter would be sharing her old bed.
"Mhm," Charlotte nodded, setting her phone to the side. "Does your family not like me because I'm homeschooled?"
"Of course not," Carrie sighed, feeling bad that she even considered that to be a thing. She sat beside her daughter on the bed, taking her hand into her own. "They just aren't used to that so they just had a lot of questions. They understand now. But one thing is for sure, they have loved you since the day you were born. They are so happy that they finally get to spend time with you."
Charlotte blushed, thankful that her suspicions were wrong, "Good, I'm glad. I really like Grandpa Stephen."
"Really? People always think he's the scary one," Carrie giggled.
"He's nice and really funny," her daughter remarked as she let out a yawn, seeping deeper into the bed.
"Go to sleep, my love," the mother kissed her daughter's forehead. "I'll be back in a few minutes."
Carrie stood up off of her bed and made her way across the hall, letting herself into the other bedroom without bothering to knock. Mike jumped in the air as he heard the door creak open as he put on a pair of shorts, "Gosh, you scared me!"
"Sorry," the blonde chuckled, turning a shade red as she couldn't help but stare at her boyfriend's shirtless body. She walked over to him, immediately attacking his lips. He was taken back by her sudden act of dominance but it turned him on as he moaned into her mouth as her fingers glided along his chiseled chest and abs.
Mike sat on the bed as she straddled his hips, continuing their heated make out session as her hands wandered through his hair and his hands gripped her butt. As Carrie started grinding on his center, that's when it hit him that they shouldn't get too carried away. He pulled away from her lips, caressing her face with both of his hands. He sighed letting her know that they shouldn't go any further, "Care."
"I know," she continued to peck his lips. "Just the way you talked about me to my dad made me love you even more. I thought you should know."
"You'll never know how much I love you, Carrie Marie," he kissed her back. "You continue to amaze me."
