Epilogue
Everyone knew Calum was depressed.
Everyone knew how many times he's tried to off himself, but nobody though he'd actually be successful. Nobody did until the day Michael came home to silence. "Calum?" he calls, only to be greeted by his own echo. He drops his jacket on the couch, assuming he'd just fallen asleep and goes upstairs to their room. "Cal, where are you?" he throws his phone and wallet on the neatly made bed and notices a folded up piece of paper on the top of his dark oak dresser.
Hesitantly, he unfolds it and reads the messy chicken scratch on the paper,
"The screaming became too much, I'm sorry. Please forgive me, Mikey I love you and the kids. -Cal." the paper falls to the ground and he drops all of the things in his hands on the way to the bathroom. It's unlocked so he pushes the door open and his heart cracks at the sight of his husband in the tub full of red water, his face deathly pale as Michael falls in after him with a sore heart and damp eyes.
"No, Calum." he sobs, holding his cold body to his chest. The red bath water was staining Michael's clothes, Michael's skin and Michael's hair as he hugged Calum's lifeless body, making his head lull uncontrollably.
"Papa? Pops, what's goi- oh my god." Liam gasps at the scene in front of him, his green eyes wide as his hand flew to cover his mouth.
Michael brushes hair off of his lover's forehead and sobs in his neck, holding him unbelievably close as his son went and called an ambulance.
"Calum, wake up, please just, tell me this is all a dream Cal." He whispers, his tears falling in the bath water as he tried to shake the other awake. "God, please." he whispers with a heavy heart.
Medics rush in and pick up Calum's body from the tub and feel around for a pulse a little hopelessly as Michael watched. One medic pauses and nods at the other and they rush away with Calum on a gurney.
"Papa, get up they found a pulse on him!" his son urges, dragging his father from the bathtub and pressing him to go faster as the blood water dripped from his body onto the floor, staining the carpet, staining his life.
Liam drives, calling his siblings as he did so.
"Yes Willow I'm sure it's dad." he rolls his eyes softly and turns into the parking lot.
"I'm already here. Okay, see you soon." he flips his phone closed and turns the car off as Michael's door is slammed closed and he's already through the door. It's weird, Michael thinks, because nobody is around Calum and nobody is in a rush anymore, he's just there on the gurney, abandoned.
"What the hell?!" Michael yells, causing a scene. "Why did you just leave him here?! Why aren't you helping him?!" he shouts and everyone's eyes are on him, mothers are covering children's ears and father's giving him a glare as he looked around for an answer.
"Sir," a woman slowly puts a hand on his shoulder and she gives Michael a sad look before turning to look at Calum. "your friend," she nods towards the body, "he didn't make it through the trip." she tells him softly. "His heart stopped three times and they got him back, they did the best they could to save him. I'm sorry for your loss." she whispers and walks away just as his knees give out and he falls to the floor with his face in his hands. He can't believe that after so many years, Calum finally gave up.
Michael thought he had him, he thought that he'd pulled him out of his depression, he was wrong. He should've known something was wrong since he didn't want to come to lunch with them. He should've known.
"Papa, you're making a scene." Liam whispers, wrapping an arm around his father's waist and hoisting him up. Michael didn't care. He didn't care if people stared or pointed and laughed at an old man crying. He just wanted Calum back.
Eventually, his son gets him back in the car, but the ride is silent. Only the distant sound of thunder could be heard in the background as a storm slowly approached their small town. Michael notices Liam, sending out a text or whatever to his siblings, telling them to just meet at the house.
When they get back, Michael is still in a state of shock. He climbs in the bed they used to share, not bothering to change his clothes and just hugged his husband's pillow. He inhales the lingering soft scent and just wishes the Calum would replace the pillow. He lays in bed motionless for just hours, his mind taking him back to some memories the couple used to share.
This reminds him of filming Amnesia when they were younger. Sometimes he thinks he sees Calum in his arms, the young Calum, laughing and smiling at something stupid that Michael had probably told him, but then he blinks, and it's all gone.
He decided that whenever he saw Calum, he would try to never blink, so he would always be able to see him not matter what. Eventually he ends up on his laptop, typing in 5sos Amnesia official music video in the search box. He never really got to watch it since they were set in so many things right after we finished filming. He clicks play.
The video starts out with all four of them walking down the street, Michael and Calum walking by one another, clasping hands tightly as they laugh. The introduction shows up on their bodies, Amnesia by 5 Seconds Of Summer. And then the music starts playing and it fades away to Calum, looking out of the false rainy window, fake tears fall out of his eyes that weren't there when they filmed. Michael sighs as it goes to the bedroom where they all play together, singing the lyrics. Everything happened just the way they filmed it and when they got to the part where they were just laying in bed, they look at each other and then Calum fades away.
Michael starts crying again, full on sobbing and he wishes he could just fade away too.
