Someone was knocking at my door. I pulled the blanket higher up and turned around, my back now facing the door. It was around three PM, so I guessed Amy was stopping by, bringing me a late lunch and probably dinner as well.
The knocking grew intenser and I was ready to murder whoever was ruining my sleep. "Fuck off!" I yelled, and for a moment, it stopped. "Thank you," I mumbled to myself before dropping my head on the pillow again.
Then, the knocking was back again. "That's it," I said, suddenly finding the energy to get out of bed and dragging myself to the door. I swung the door open. "What part of fuck o-" I stopped when my eyes met the brown eyes I'd grown familiar to.
"Hi," the Australian boy in front of me said, his hands in his pockets, reminding me of Crystal's message two days ago. "Hey," I said, tears forming in my eyes already. He immediately wrapped his arms around me. "Shh, don't cry," he said, kissing the top of my head. Calum was holding me up, as I was clinging to him like I was afraid he was going to disappear.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," I whispered. "No no no. You don't apologize. I'm sorry. It should've never happened." he said. He lifted me up and brought me to my bed, sitting me down on the bed. "I ran away," I whispered and he held me even closer, my head pressed tightly against his chest. His t-shirt getting wet by the tears streaming down my face. "I ignored you."
"Liz, I hurt you. It triggered you and that never should've happened, you were right to run away. You wanted to protect yourself. It's okay. Don't feel guilty." he whispered in my ear. I curled up against him and closed my eyes. "I hope you can forgive me for what happened. I promised you I would never hurt you and what happened is all my fault," he said. "You're forgiven," I whispered back at him.
"Can we start over?" he asked, playing with my hair as I calmed down. "Yes," I whispered, still holding onto him.
We sat there for a while, just us, holding each other. Calum kissing my forehead, rubbing my back or playing with my hair. "How did you know where I lived?" I asked him and he smiled softly. "Ash knew your address. He was texting Amy while we weren't speaking. He told me you were doing really bad, so after you texted me I took the first flight to Boston." he said. "I didn't know you suffered from depressive episodes," he said and I shrugged. "Shrink told me it was probably a one-time thing, because of the whole Tommy thing," I explained.
Calum bit his lip and I knew what he was thinking. "It's not your fault, it's my stupid traumatized brain's fault," I said, comforting him. Silence.
"You don't have to stay," I whispered. "I know I'm not easy to love. I just want to tell you that it's completely okay if you can't handle my flaws or lose interest in me because I don't expect you to when I can't even like myself right now. It's been great believing that someone out there accepts me and I guess it doesn't last - but it's fine. I don't really care that much anymore. Sure, I'll suffer on my own like before but at least I don't have to drag someone into this." I started to ramble.
He laughed, that effortless, happy laugh of his. "Trying to get to know you was tough, and getting me to tell you how I feel is sometimes brutal, but loving you isn't hard. Loving you is the easy part." He said without a doubt. "And I love you so, so much," he said, kissing my forehead.
"I want to give you something." Calum suddenly said after that, and I raised my eyebrow. He let go of me and was reaching for his pocket. Then, he pulled out a ring.
"Cal-" he cut me off. "No, I'm not asking you to marry me...yet," he said with a smirk. "You should see your face though," he said and I gave him a small push on his shoulder. He showed me the ring and I recognized it immediately. It was the ring that started it all. The freaking ring that hit me in the face at the concert. The ring that represented the male line of the Hoods.
"It's a promise ring. With this ring, I promise that from now on, I will never hurt you. I will protect you. I will never, ever, let you down again." he said. "Aren't your parents going to kill you for this?" I asked and he shrugged. "Not as long as you stick around with it," he said. "And I hope you stick around for a long, long time," he said and took his ring. "Okay," I said. "Do you want to ... stick around with me for a long, long time as well?" he said, and I smiled at him. "I do."
"Can I now kiss the not-bride?" he asked and I laughed. "You can."
He kissed me carefully, just like he did the first time we kissed back in France. Short, soft and scared he wasn't doing the right thing. So I kissed him back with more confidence. Making sure I let him know that this was okay. We were okay.
He pulled back and looked me into my eyes. "How do you feel about a shower? No sex, just showering," he said and I nodded. I hadn't showered in days, so that would be nice. "And think we should go to my hotel after? I don't feel like spending the next two days in your dorm with your roommate in the bed next to us," he said and I laughed. "Sure. Why did you book a hotel anyway?"
Calum shrugged. "I wasn't sure if you'd let me in," he said and I nodded. "Right."
I stood up and grabbed two towels and clean clothes before I showed him the small bathroom in our dorm. "Cozy," he said with a small laugh. "Shut up, we can't all be in the biggest band in the world," I told him before turning the shower on.
Calum grabbed the ends of my shirt and pulled it over my head. "I'm going to teach you the bass one day," he said before pulling his own shirt off. "Well, good luck. I tried the guitar when I was like, 11, before finding out that I had little to no talent."
He giggled and I realized how much I missed him in the past days. I kicked my sweatpants aside and threw my underwear next to it. Calum was watching me with a little smirk on his face as he pulled down his boxers. "Don't give me that look, Calum. No funny business. I don't have the energy for that." I told him before stepping under the small shower as Calum followed me.
"This hardly fits one person," he says. "As you said. Cozy." I told him before grabbing my shampoo, but Calum grabbed it out of my hand, squeezing some on his hands before putting it in my hair, massaging in it.
He laughed as soon as he saw the rubber duck that my roommate had put in the corner of the shower.
"Cute duck," he said as I closed my eyes so he could rinse the shampoo out.
"You've got a weakness for cute things" I laughed.
"Yeah" he looked at me, but I still had my eyes closed, "I do".
