Chapter 17: Home Sweet Home

**Peridot's POV**

I parked the car at some gas station. There was only one other car there, which probably belonged to someone who worked there.

Lapis was still asleep in the passengers seat, and I got out.

I opened my trunk, and there was a giant thing of gas. I took it, went to the side of my car, and filled the gas tank.

While I was doing that, I saw someone walk out of the little store.
She was big and muscular with tan skin, and she had rainbow dyed hair with stars tattoed on both her shoulders.

She looked over at me, and her eyes widened.

"hey, you're that girl the government is looking for, huh?"
She called, sounding very calm.

"yeah, so? Are you gonna call the police on me or something?"

She shook her head.
"nah, if anything, I just wanna talk for a bit."

She came closer and I backed up to the car. She came over and she stuck her hand out.
"Name's Bismuth."

I hesitated for a second, before shaking her hand.
"Peridot."

There a moment of silence before she spoke.

"so why is the government after you?"
I was silent. I was trying to come up with a lie, but for once I had nothing.

"something you're not supposed to say, huh?"

I nodded.
"I understand that."

She smiled again, and then I heard Lapis get out of the car.

"hey, Peri. Who's th..-"
Her voice trailed off and she and Bismith looked at each other like they each had two heads.

"Its been a while, Lapis.."
Bismuth said, scratching the back of her head.
"yeah..." Lapis agreed, stepping closer to me.

"you two know each other?" I asked, looking at both of them.

"Bismuth and I had a fight once or twice in middle school.. We kind of hated each other..."

"may I ask why?"
There was silence. I could tell neither of them wanted to talk about it.

"okay then, dont tell me. What I need to know is if you two can make up?"

They nodded. I crossed my arms in a mannor that said 'im waiting', and they looked at each other again.

"im sorry.." Bismuth spoke.
"im sorry too.."

This made me slightly happier. I quickly realized we were wasting time, and urged Lapis to go back into the car and wait for me.

Bismuth told her something before she walked to the car. I was pretty curious as to what she was told, but I didn't ask in case it was something personal.
