I smiled as I unwrapped the necklace's packaging. The apple on the chain was a silver one, not a red one. I assumed it was because it looks nicer and classy to have a silver one. I put it on, and my smile grew wider.
"It's beautiful." I say to myself as I check it out in the mirror.
I could actually win, if I try! I think to myself.
I call for an apple from the kitchen, even though dinner is soon.
When it comes up, it's accompanied by Neveni.
"Hi," he says, "I like your necklace."
"Thank you!" I say as I take the apple out of his hands.
I invite him in, and we sit down on my comfy chairs.
"So," he says taking a bite out of the apple he grabbed for himself, "I got a notice today that if you were to ask, I can take you down to the apple orchard. Is this true?"
"Yep! I went there with Alkai on our date, and I loved it so much there, that he said he could tell someone to take me out there whenever I want to!" I say finishing off my apple.
"I knew you went, but I've never been there. I guess I'll have to find it, because I have a feeling we'll be going there often."
"You're feeling is correct! Do you have another apple?"
"No," he says "but I'll try to bring more next time."
We talk for a long time about a bunch of things, like what Liam has been up to, and his family. Apparently, he has an older sister as well as his parents. I told him that I only have my mom and he asked why, and I said he died.
"How?" he asked.
"A bomb killed him right in front of Liam's eyes when they were both in the Royals Guard."
"Uh," he says disbelievingly, "that never happened, because we have no record of that, and I went everywhere with Liam, and I NEVER saw that."
"Do you want to hear the truth?" I ask him.
"Yes."
I take a deep breath.
"He was a Chosen. Before the death rule, so when he lost, he married my mom, and had children and joined the Royals Guard, like Liam. But, when they invented the you-lose-you-die rule for the Chosens, the couldn't have a Chosen who lost on their guard, so they executed him. Without telling us. We just were waiting for him to come home one day, and he never did. So, my mom called the Royal Guard and asked them where he was, if he was still there, and what not. They said he was killed and told her why. I just remember her dropping the phone and falling to the floor, and Liam rushing to help her with whatever happened. Soon after, Liam left the Royals Guard because he couldn't bear going to work and working for the people who destroyed us. We just say that he was killed by a bomb, because it's easier to deal with than the truth."
There are tears running down my face by the time I'm done talking. Neveni comes to hug me and I collapse into his arms and cry.
"I'm sorry." he says.
"No, it's fine, really. I needed to tell someone. It's just, that's why I say I'm going to die, because he did, and I'm just like him. He always talked about how beautiful the apple orchards are here, and so when he died, I started eating apples, and I've grown to love them."
"You're not going to loose."
"Do you want to bet?"
He laughs.
"Trust me, ok?!"
We both laugh and he hands me a tissue.
"Okay," he says, "it's almost time for dinner, so I'm sure you're maids are out in the hall waiting to come in and get you ready."
He gets up and opens the door. Sure enough, there they all are.
"She's all yours!" Neveni tells them, then leaves, closing the door on the way out.
Heyo! I might have seriously injured my finger because I've been typing so fast all the time lately. 😂😂😂 I'm a nerd, I know. Ok see you later, bye!!
