I stay in my room for a few more days, then, about a week after the attack, I finally go downstairs for breakfast. It was weird being assisted by my new guard and nobody talked. At breakfast, we had eggs of all kinds. Fried, scrambled, hard boiled, over easy, etc. I took some scrambled and a hard boiled egg, and chew slowly. Playing with my food. We were allowed to sit anywhere today and I chose to sit as far away from Alkai as possible. I knew it wasn't his fault, but I didn't want to talk to him. Instead, I sit between Lindsey and Penny. They give me some space -obviously they found out about Neveni's death, and probably knowing me, know that I don't want to talk about it. Everyone looks at me though, wondering where I was and why I'm not sitting by Alkai, including Alkai. The King notices and just smiles. Of course he would. He thinks that we aren't together. Sucks for him. I pour some milk and drink it all in one sip. Eventually, everyone stops staring at me and pays attention to their food.
~
"Ok," the King says after almost all of us are finished with our food, "today we are all going to the apple orchard! It's here in the palace grounds, so we won't need to travel far. Just head back to your rooms and change, and your guard will lead you to our meeting spot, then we'll all together!"
"He's in a good mood today," I say to Lindsey.
Penny also overhears and laughs along with Lindsey and I.
" I'm sorry about Neveni," Penny says.
"Me too!" says Lindsey, "I can't  believe they didn't throw a funeral!"
"I really didn't want to go to it anyway."
"True," Penny says.
Then were released to go get ready.
~
"This is the apple orchard," the King says, in a very happy mood.
All of our guards lead us through the palace gardens and trees and the woods where I broke my foot. Everyone was amazed, I wasn't because I had seen it before. I felt jealous that other people were seeing my favorite place in the palace, but didn't dare say anything. I didn't want to hint that I'd been there before.
"This place is beautiful!!" Rhyliegh says, enthusiastically.
"Thank you! We love it too! We even got a new edition earlier this month!" The King says, pointing towards a bench. I gasp, because I've never seen it here before and it's beautiful. I run towards it and sit down on it.
"This is beautiful!!!" I say.
Alkai catches my eye and smiles.
" It was my idea!" he says proudly.
I smile back at him.
"Feel free to wander around here, pick apples, lay down, whatever you want to do!" The Queen states to all of us.
Were let go, and I rush to the tree that I was at before, the one I'm always at. I pick a ripe apple from its branches, and slide down to the ground, putting my back against the bark, and close my eyes so that I can just sink it all in.
Someone sits down beside me.
"I love it here!" I say, my eyes still closed.
"I know," the person says. Alkai.
"Foster," he says, "you're the apple of my heart!"
He holds up an apple. It's green, unlike all the other apples here. They're all red apple trees.
"Where did you get this?" I ask.
"Well," he says, " it was on this tree, all apart from the others, looking beautiful. I picked it because it reminded me of you."
I blush and take a bite out of it.
"Hm. I guess I'm one very juicy, sweet green apple." I say, then laugh.
"For real though," he says, " you're the apple of my heart."
I can't resist. I lean in and kiss him.
"I love you!" We both say at the same time.
I catch the King looking from far away, his smile gone. Ha for him.
