More time passed, and as it did Barry only grew more upset about his situation, more upset with himself. He blamed himself for what happened to Y/N; if she was even still alive.

Currently, Barry was out on a call, a robbery at Gold City National Bank. He had managed to successfully apprehend 3 armed robbers, and yet, he didn't feel like celebrating.

Barry was about to speed away when he heard someone calling his name, "Flash!" Captain Singh called out.

Barry stopped in his tracks, turning on his heels, "Captain," he addressed. "Can I do something for you?" he asked.

Singh shrugged, "That depends, do you mind telling me where your friend is?" he wondered. "Everyone in this city has noticed her absence, we're all a little curious as to her whereabouts."

Barry sighed, feeling saddened by the thought of Y/N. "Let's just say you might not see her for a while," Barry told him, not wanting to give away too many details.

"Give it to me straight, how bad does a situation have to be for her to be gone for this long?" Singh asked. "I mean you two are superheroes...come on."

"I'm sorry I can't tell you more, but for now, it's just going to be me running around this city," Barry told him before speeding away.

It had now been 4 months since Y/N had first been taken into the speed force, Barry thought that her rebirth process would have been over a long time ago. The speed force did remind him that it might not work, that Y/N might have been past saving by the time he got her there, maybe he wasn't fast enough...

At the same time, Barry knew that Y/N would want him to keep moving forward. Barry dedicated himself to his work, he had spent more time as The Flash lately than he ever had before. Crime rates in the city were down exponentially. Barry also devoted himself to his CSI work at CCPD, he had been juggling cases left and right.

He tried to spend time with the team, and though he put on a happy face, they could tell that Barry wasn't genuinely happy, even if he acted like it. Oliver had visited several times, trying to comfort Barry, to convince that there was nothing he could have done, that he did everything in his power.

But still, Barry believed that he could have done something more, thought of something more to save her.

Barry was at S.T.A.R. Labs with Cisco, considering his options to find the truth about Y/N.

"I mean, you could just run into the speed force and ask it, right?" Cisco wondered, turning to face Barry.

He shrugged, "I guess, I just wish there was some other way to know."

Cisco put a friendly hand on Barry's shoulder. "Go to the speed force, find Y/N, and bring her home," Cisco told him.

Barry nodded slowly before speeding into his suit, "Here goes nothing," Barry said before racing off and into the speed force.

He quickly came to a halt when he saw his mother standing before him, but there was no sign of Y/N. Barry didn't know whether he should be happy, or upset at the fact that he didn't see her where he had left her.

"Why are you here?" his mother asked.

"Where is she?" Barry asked, ignoring the previous question.

Barry's mother looked down, now realizing why he was here, and who he wanted to see. "I told you there might not be a way to bring her back," she reminded him. "I made no promises, no guarantees."

Barry looked down, he now knew what had happened to Y/N. "I did everything in my power, but it wasn't enough. She was gone the moment you brought her here," the speed force told Barry.

"So she's dead?" he choked out, tears brimming in his eyes.

The speed force remained silent for a moment, "Not necessarily..."

"What do you mean by-"

Barry was then suddenly cast out of the speed force against his will. Barry fell to the concrete of an empty street in Central City. He didn't know why the speed force sent him away, but he knew that there had to be a reason.

Barry got up and tried to run himself back in, but something was blocking him from entering the speed force, keeping him out. Barry tried again and again, but he still couldn't get in, each time he tried he got knocked off his feet on the ground.

Barry slowly brought himself back to his feet before running back to S.T.A.R. Labs, Cisco met him in the doorway as he pulled off his mask.

Cisco sighed when he saw the sad expression on Barry's face, the face of a broken man. "Did you find her?" he asked. Cisco immediately regretted asking when he saw how his question affected Barry.

Barry shook his head before sitting down in one of the chairs in the Cortex. He put his head in his hands, "No, I didn't see her, but she's not dead. At least not necessarily," Barry explained.

Cisco approached his friend, "What the hell does that mean?" he asked.

Barry looked up at Cisco, "I don't know, the speed force said that and then threw me out quite literally."

"Wait, the speed force can cast somebody out, just like that?" Cisco wondered.

Barry shrugged, "Apparently," he replied. "And now I can't run back into the speed force, something is blocking me, keeping me locked out."

Cisco sat down beside Barry. "But she's not dead, she's out there, or in the speed force, or somewhere for that matter."

"Where, Cisco?" Barry asked, raising his voice slightly. "Where the hell are we going to find her? I can't get back into the speed force."

Cisco sighed, "We'll get her back, Barry. No one is giving up on her."

Barry stood up, shaking his head, "I just need some time to think, to process," he said speeding out of the Cortex.

Barry spent the rest of the night running, thinking, trying to do anything to clear his head. When he did finally stop, he didn't know what to do, or what to think. All Barry knew was that he wanted to see Y/N, and that seemed like an impossible thing to accomplish, so what now?
