Danny POV
I roll over to see the sunshine greeting me through the curtains. I look and see Emily peacefully sleeping next to me. I reach out to just brush my fingers across her cheek before I stop and wonder if all this is a dream.
If this is dream I don't want to ever wake up. I almost lost her once and I promised her that night in the hospital that I would never let anything happen to her ever again.
I have my hand over her when she opens hers. "Umm Danny?" She said and it snapped me out of my daydream.
"Yeah?"
"Can you tell me why your hand is just randomly above my face."
"I was gonna pat you on the head." I told her with a smile.
"Yeah okay, I'm not a dog but whatever." She said as she rolled over.
"I didn't say you were a dog."
"Pats are dogs." She said as she got out of bed. I can see her getting bigger and it brings joy to me.
"Well then." I say with a small laugh and she just walks to bedroom door. "Where are you going?" I ask her.
"I'm going make sure Collin is up and ready for the bus."
"You know he's basically an adult and I have faith in him that he's ready for school." I tell her as I think back on how much Collin has matured since Emily's accident.
"I know but sometimes I'm afraid this is all a dream. Sometimes I want my little brother to need me and me not need him so much." She says as she leaves the room.
It's been a month since we've been living here and at first the adjustment was easy. Maybe it's because Emily wanted out of the hospital that she didn't care where we lived. But as the days went by I could see Emily become more restless and I'm not sure if it's because of her pregnancy or because of what happened is finally hitting her.
She's done well with physical therapy and understanding that she can be Wonder Woman anymore for us, and it's our turn to take care of her.
I get up and go down stairs to see Emily standing on the back porch and Collin by the front door.
I walk over to him and ask him "What's wrong?"
He shakes his head and says nothing and walks out the front door.
I turn to see Emily still standing there with the back door wide open on the back porch. I walk over and try to just see what happened.
"Sunshine?"
"Yeah?"
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing, I just wanted to see if this yard had nice feel to it like ours did." She says as she walks to the edge.
"Emily, this house is not your old house. This is our new house. You need to stop judging and comparing the two homes." I tell her as walk towards her.
"I know but it's just hard to wrap my mind around everything that's happened. Parts of me are glad that we are starting a new chapter in a new home that's ours, but then I'm just scared of the future and want my old life back in my house." She tells me and I grab her hand and pull her close to me.
"Emily, you need to stop being afraid of the future. What happens happens. I'm always going to be here for and with you. I love you and I'll protect you. Now, you just need to accept this as our home and make it your own." I tell her as I kiss the side of her head.
She leans more into me and says "I know."
We just stand there taking in the moment. I'm a short time Collin will be off in college and our children will be here with us. Soon I'll be able to call my parents and sisters as if nothing ever happened. There will be a time where all this will be just a memory and our lives will be more valued because of the struggles and success we went through together. There will be a day when I'll stop thinking of the horror in life but just think of what I'm going to be doing with the family over the weekend.
