Day 6 of the 30 Day Challenge
My current favorite movie is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
In 1946, Juliet Ashton, a London writer, begins exchanging letters with Dawsey Adams, a resident of the island of Guernsey, which was occupied by the Nazis during World War II. Juliet visits the island to meet the members of the literary society and learns what their lives were like before, during, and after the occupation.
I love everything about this movie, except it's too long title. But how the society got it's long name is a very important part of the movie. It's the first scene, and then you are hooked to find out what will happen to them next. Just like Juliet, I instantly fell in love with all the members of the socety, old and young, and I will forever remember them.
There are so many good quotes from this movie! It was hard to pick only six.
1) "Perhaps there's some secret sort of homing instincts in books that brings them to their perfect readers. How delightful if that were true." - Juliet in a letter to Dawsey
2) "We were all hungry. But it was Elizabeth who realized our true starvation. For connection, the company of others, for fellowship." - Dawsey in a letter to Juliet
3) "But I don't need to tell you this. You already know what books can do. That's something we share, different as our lives may be." - Juliet in a letter to Dawsey
4) "Books have been a refuge for me, too." - Juliet in a letter to Dawsey
5) "Here is a book filled with love, and you overlook all of it in favour of judgement and petty meanness." - Juliet, holding a Bible, speaking to Miss Stimple
6) "It's terrible to lose a friend when you don't have many." - Isola speaking to Juliet
