Scarlette's POV
I looked around making sure nobody saw us coming out of the shop. Hazel was in front, Michael hot on her heels. Each of the boys had a pistol, nothing too special. We explained to them what the Purge was before we left the alley behind the shop. "This isn't going to protect us! Why can't we get weapons like yours?" Luke complained for the fourth time. I was about to shoot the guy, and by the look on Hazel's face, so was she. "Luke shut up before I shoot you myself!" Hazel exclaimed. I didn't doubt that she would, but he didn't know that. Luke stopped talking not long after. We walked for a few more minutes until Hazel stopped without warning. "What the heck Haze?" I nearly shouted but stopped quickly when I saw why we stopped. The boys all had their pistols raised with the dogs in 'attack' mode right next to Hazel who looked beyond pissed off. She had her machete raised at a guy who looked vaguely familiar. I got to the front and stood my ground next to Hazel with my shotgun raised. I recognized him as Garret, a boy who bullied Hazel and me for two years. "Who is that?" Calum whispered. A shot was fired that shut everyone up real quick. Nobody was shot; it was just a warning shot. I looked back at Calum and shot him a glare. "His name's Garret, we used to go to school together, he-" I was cut off by Ashton. "He what? Broke your heart?" That earned him another warning shot. "No, he bullied us for two years…" The boys looked at each other and raised their pistols. Garret was holding some sort of fancy handgun. He looked pretty calm for somebody who was about to get killed. He raised the gun and shot. The moment he shot, I shot, and so did the others. Garret fell to the ground, and so did… Calum. "Calum!" The other three boys and I said in unison. I grabbed the first aid kit and made my way over to him. "He was shot in the shoulder," Luke said frantically. He was right, luckily the bullet went straight through, so there wouldn’t be any leftover bullet fragments in his shoulder. "Guys, he'll be fine!" Hazel said voicing my thoughts. "Let's just take him back to the shop so Charlie can take better care of him." Luke and Michael helped Calum up while Hazel led the group. Ashton was behind Calum just in case he fell back. I went over to Garret's motionless body and picked up his gun. It was a Beretta M9A1, one of the most beautiful handguns I have ever seen. “Haze! Look what kind of gun he had!” I couldn’t help but be excited and giddy about this. I’ve always wanted this gun, but Hazel wouldn’t let me buy one because they were too expensive. She just ignored me. I turned away from her and tucked the gun in my waistband.
After Calum was all patched up, we started back on our track with the other three boys. We were all walking in silence, waiting to see who our next victim will be. We turned a corner only to be attacked by a homeless man and his dog. We didn’t have time to respond before he picked up a metal pipe and swung it at us. We could smell the alcohol in his breath; resulting in him barely missing us. The silence was filled by the snarls of our dogs as they waited for Hazel to give the command. The man swung the bar at us again, hitting me in the gut. Hazel was about to give the command to the dogs, but the man’s Pit bull attacked first. The man swung for a third time, but I shot him before he could hit anybody else. Hazel shot the Pit bull so the dogs wouldn’t fight anymore. With the recent event behind us, we decided to take a break and stop at an abandoned diner. We checked the perimeter of the building before scoping out the inside. Carefully and cautiously we entered the diner and sat at the bar. I went and pulled the ice cream out of the freezer. I handed each of them a tub and spoons, and sat in between Ashton and Luke. “So, Australia huh?” I asked nobody in general, taking a spoonful of ice cream. I heard Hazel snort from the other side of the bar. The boys glanced at her, then turned their attention to me. “What crawled up her arse and died?” Michael whispered not so quietly to Ashton. I held back a snicker while Luke started to guffaw. “Four Australian boys who almost got killed today” Hazel replied wryly. We looked at her a little bewildered by her response. She got up and walked to the back of the store ignoring our expressions. “Don’t worry, she isn’t always like that, she’s just had a rough year. After the Purge, you will be able to see the real Hazel,” I told the three boys giving them a reassuring smile. I walked to the back of the store to go check on Hazel. I turned the corner to see her throwing her knives against the back wall; her way of relieving stress. I decided not to bother her, so I went back to the front of the diner. “Hey, what’s that?” Luke asked pointing to the scar on my arm. “Oh just a little friendship reminder,” I told the boys waving them off. When they gave me confused looks, I went on. “Hazel gave this to me the first Purge after we met… we didn’t really like each other two years ago.” They nodded their heads understandingly. “Wait, is that how she got the scar on her neck, that she tries so hard to cover up, but fails miserably?” Michael asked curiously. I nodded and looked at him. “…It’s kind of cute.” He whispered more to himself than to us. We all turned our heads and looked at him strangely. “Mate, she’s a murderer,” Ashton said warily backing up a couple steps. “So? She’s a murderer for 12 hours, maybe she’s different when the Purge is over,” Michael reasoned. “What’s your story?” Luke came up asking me. “Do you really want to know?” I couldn’t help but challenge him. He didn’t know what he was getting himself in to; I just didn’t want to push him away too much. He just nodded so I continued. “Well, I was abused almost my whole life by my dad. My mom didn’t get full custody until I was about fifteen. I had to transfer schools, I became suicidal, I lost a girl I thought was my best friend, she turned on me. That was kind of when Hazel and I became great friends. Her boyfriend, well now ex-boyfriend, cheated on her with the other girl. Haze thought it was me, so that was where we got the scars and became best friends. Ever since then I have had trust issues, my guard is up 24/7, so I don’t really make many friends, or go on dates or anything really. Haze is my only friend along with Alec and Charlie.” I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding when I was done with my little rant. “Wow,” was his reply. “I am so sorry, love. That has to be the worst thing in the world to have all those things happen to you. I’m so sorry!” “I don’t need your pity!” I sneered as I turned around. He might not have said he pitied me, but the look in his eyes told me he did. I was so tired of people pitying me. I have had a rough life. So what! Everyone has had something awful happen to them. I walked over to Hazel. “I’m ready to head back out, are you?” I asked rudely. “Not quite yet. I think there are things we should learn about these guys.” She replied looking at the three boys sitting at the bar. I looked at her skeptically since I had no idea what she was thinking. She smirked at me when she saw the look I was giving her. “Follow me.” I followed her to the bar, then stood behind it. “Hey guys! What’s up?” Ashton asked giving us a curious look. I just shrugged a pointed to Hazel. We all turned our attention to her. She just turned away looking at Michael who was in the corner on his phone. She walked over and sat by him, they were talking quietly so I couldn’t make out what they were saying. I turned my attention back to Ashton. “Ashton, right?” I asked. I mentally face palmed myself knowing I sounded super ridiculous. He chuckled lightly, “Yeah.” “Tell me about yourself? Like, what’s your story?” I asked trying to be a little more of myself. “Do you really want to know?” he asked using the same words I used on Luke earlier. I guess he was listening in on our conversation. I thought he was in the other room though. Oh well… all I could do was nod my head. I didn’t think I could talk without making a rude comment. So I let him continue. “Well, I have two siblings, a sister Lauren and brother Harry, I grew up with only a mother. My dad left us early on. I was suicidal at one point. I have to wear bracelets to cover up all of my cuts. I was in the hospital through most of grade 11. I can play four different instruments. I’m the best listener in the band. I –“ “Wait a second, did u just say band?” I cut him off, then answered my own question. “Oh my God you’re in a band? Holy shit! Are we going to get in trouble for kidnapping famous people? Oh God, Oh God! Hazel! They are in a band! They’re famous! Oh my God the fandom is going to kill us! Do you know how tough fandom chicks are?!” I ranted pacing the diner. The others just snickered at me while Ashton came over to me and sat me down. “They aren’t going to hurt you. I promise. Plus they won’t even know we’re gone. Okay?” he said trying to calm me down. I nodded my head.
