The next morning, Grace got up early to get ready for the funeral for Sean's mother. What a miracle it has been for Sean, finding a nice funeral home and allowing him to arrange the funeral service a day after. Grace wasn't fond on funerals and hated how they were supposed to wear all black to show respect. During her parents' funeral, Carly and her agreed to dress in white, making the mood less depressing. That moment didn't seem to long ago, but she didn't like to remember the feeling or the memory. After a long shower, she finally dressed herself in a black fitted dress that reached the tip of her knee. She wanted to look simple, since it was a funeral.
As she grabbed the ends of her brown locks, her mind was reverted back to yesterday's dinner. The food was great, especially since it was her favorite, and dancing to her favorite kind of music. Was there anything Steve didn't know about her? Grace wasn't the kind of girl who confessed her feelings to a guy. She was unsure of her feelings for Steve, trying her best to push the romantic ones aside.
She couldn't help herself, since Steve was a good looking guy even for a ninety four year old. And his kind, modest personality certainly caught Grace's eye. He was just the guy she's been looking for. If only, he felt the same about her. Most likely, Steve probably had feelings for Peggy still.
Whatever. He probably won't like an unmannered woman like me, Grace thought.
She brushed the feeling aside as she applied on her makeup. Simple flick of mascara and a touch of blush, Grace was ready for the day. The girls were still asleep as Grace passed by their bedrooms. Typical, since they usually sleep in until whenever. The outside was cold, but Grace felt warm as she wrapped the jacket Steve had bought her.
She thought of Sean and how hard this experience would be for him. The tone was different between the two and Grace was starting to see the real Sean. From her first day at New York City, she knew Sean was going to be trouble for her. He mocked her complaints about wanting to go to the beach every ten minutes, and made fun of her low knowledge of New York City. But, it wasn't until Grace earned a higher spot in office, Sean became her worst enemy. Always trying his best to put himself above her.
She soon arrived at the funeral home, expecting some sort of a crowd to be there. Instead, there was Sean, their boss, and other people from their work. That was probably the reason why the funeral home allowed Sean to have the service a day after. She walked over to Sean and greeted him with a sincere smile, before handing him a small bouquet of white flowers. His smile seemed to be strained, or faked, as he turned to place the flowers near the coffin. Grace wanted to comfort Sean in his desperate time of need.
She grabbed his hand and laced it together with her own. Sean was a bit startled by her gesture, but gave her hand a small reassuring squeeze. One by one, people started to gather, some Grace didn't recognize.
Must be some of his relatives.
They greeted Sean, one by one, even questioned him about Grace. From their holding hands action, people assumed they were a couple. After a while, Grace felt a light tap on her shoulder. She loosened her grip on Sean's hand as she turned to see who it was.
"Grace, can I speak to you?" Her boss asked.
She looked over at Sean as she unlaced her hand from his. Her boss gave her a skeptical look, confused by their action.
"Okay, well, tonight, we are planning a surprise welcome back party for Sean."
"Aw, how sweet of you guys. He really needs that."
"We want you to be his date to the party. You're the one who's going to guide him to the office."
Grace bit her lip before replying, "Date?"
"Yeah, aren't you two dating now?"
She let out a small chuckle, "No. We just, aren't enemies anymore."
Her boss gave her a confused look, "Oh, I'm sorry. I assumed since you two were holding hands today."
"No, we aren't. So when's this party?"
"Tonight. Be there about 6:30, and just take him through the office. We'll be on the top floor."
"Do you mind if I invite someone to come along?"
"As long as this visitor doesn't ruin anything, then sure."
Her boss gave her a small wave before walking back to Sean. How was she supposed to ask Sean? The feeling would be strange for Grace. How would Sean react to her offer? And, would he mind if Steve tagged along?
She gathered up all her strength and courage as she walked back to Sean. He noticed her presence, and greeted her with another friendly smile. The smile made her heart melt, which was something she would have to get used too.
"Sean, would you like to go out to dinner with me?"
He was a bit startled by her question and took a while to respond.
"Sure, is there any reason why?"
"No reason, just to rebuild our messed up friendship." She paused for a second, "Do you mind if I bring Steve along?"
Another long pause, "Yeah, that's fine."
Something in that sentence made Grace feel bad. Usually, dinners included two people. But Grace didn't want to leave Steve out in getting to know Sean. He flashed another smile before walking off. Grace couldn't help but feel bad; something in that sentence must have disappointed Sean. Interrupting her confused thoughts, her phone rings loudly. She glanced over at the caller ID, seeing it was Uncle Phil who was calling.
"Hello?"
"Grace, Erik's back."
