“Follow me. We are going back to camp.” Mebi said as she stalked away in the other direction. TT went after her, followed closely by Syntrax who seems to have calmed his nerves. I'm in an alliance with them now. I should follow them back to their camp. Perhaps there will be more people there. More people to fight.
We walked past two trucks parked haphazardly in the middle of the road and continues up a ramp that was past a large building with a red rooftop. By looking in the windows, I could tell it was a restaurant. Not a very good one. apparently. It was empty but for tables and chairs. As we made it to the top of the ramp, I could see from the top that this whole area was a valley surrounded by tall hills. This ramp seemed the only practical way to the top. If I tried, I could recognize the dark old wooden buildings where I fought Elon and met Shar.
The party didn't stop too long to take in the view. I stayed for a moment more, remembering the different paths and objects. I turned around to catch up with the three of them. We continued down a worn dirt path into a seemingly endless forest. The forest was almost unnaturally flat and all of the pine trees looked nearly alike. Not quite as interesting scenery as the view of the town. We must have walk down the path for an hour before we stopped for a rest. I wiped away the sweat that was forming on my forehead. The image of TT's knife flashed in my mind. I shivered at the thought of how easily my life was taken and looked to the sun. It was in the same place as always.
“What's up with the sun and sky? Doesn't it move at all?” I asked, trying to break the silent hiking trip. Syntrax answered quickly.
“Nope. Sorry, champ.” He reached down and picked a long blade of grass off the ground. He then ripped it in half and let it fall to the ground. The grass disappeared into thin air. The blade of grass that was cut short when Syntrax picked it regrew.
TT spoke after rolling her eyes at Syntrax. “Nothing moves in this world besides people and knives. Everything you see is either rock solid or returns once moved. We can't change it.”
“Yeah, what she said.” Syntrax said.
Interesting. Nothing moves but people and knives. Why is that? I picked up a blade of grass myself. A moment later it was gone and once more where I had picked it. Exactly the same as it was before.
Mebi stood watching the three of us like… like a Mebi. Her stare was unique. Sensing that our conversation was done, she continued down the path and called back,”Let's go! Camp is 20 minutes away.”
We followed Mebi without further conversation. I started hearing voices and knives clashing a few minutes before the camp became visible. Mebi didn't look alarmed, neither did TT or Syntrax. Instead of speaking up, I trusted them that this was normal. Perhaps it's people training?
We entered the camp through a large gate that was perpetually open. The gate was attached to large wooden walls that extended all around in a large circle. There were tents around the outside and a large opening in the middle that contained a large fire pit that was burning fiercely. There were lots of people gathered around in a circle, oblivious to our arrival. They were cheering on two people in the center who were dueling.
One of the people in the center was someone I recognized. The other I didn't. I couldn't believe my eyes when Elon shoved his blade into the heart of his opponent. The crowd cheered loudly for Elon’s victory. A few moments of the roaring and a tall man walked up to greet us. He had black hair and bright ice blue eyes. He wore a navy blue hoodie.
“Welcome back, Mebi. Who's the nooby?” He had a deep voice, but sounded friendly enough. He stood casually and at ease.
Mebi smiled and replied,”This is Butter. How are things while I was gone?”
“Hello, Butter, I'm Ebi. And great. Nothing really-” He was cut off by Mebi.
“Good. Teach Butter the basics. I'm going back out for a while. I'll return soon.” She then quickly turned and started to leave but halted when someone called her.
“Mebi! Mebi!” A short kid with yellow skin called Mebi. He was wearing a blue shirt and green pants and wore a red dinosaur hat. Mebi sighed and turned around to look at him. The most off putting thing about him was that his face was turned 90 degrees to his right. Both of his eyes were vertical and his nose and mouth were on the middle and left side of his head. He even opened his mouth sideways.
“What, Lin?”
Lin caught up and unsheathed his short knife that glowed green. It was the one in the shop earlier. It was called Circuit.
“Look what Ebi taught me earlier!” He then tossed his knife in the air and tried to catch it. It did 3 flips and landed straight down on his hand. It cut clean through. He screamed in pain at his failed attempt to grab the hilt. Syntrax burst out laughing, holding his stomach and fell to the ground. His laugh soon became a series of gasps. Ebi facepalmed and Mebi smirked. Even TT held a hand over her mouth to hide her smile. I was finding it hard not to laugh, myself.
“That's very good, Lin. Heh, keep practicing.” Was all Mebi said before she turned around and left the camp. She went left once she went through the open gate, continuing along the path that we took to get here.
“Alright. Take the knife out and it'll heal in half an hour. Until then, I recommend you take a break from learning your knife tricks.” Lin sniffed and nodded, walking across the camp and crawling into a tent, careful not to put weight on his injured hand.
Ebi turned to TT and Syntrax. “You two can go now. I need to show Butter around.” TT didn't answer and went off into her own tent. Syntrax was still giggling when he stood up on shaky legs and stumbled to a secluded corner.
Ebi extended his arm for a handshake. “Sorry you had to see that, nice to meet you.”
I shook his hand. “Nice to meet you as well.” Trying to start a conversation, I asked, “Is Mebi in charge here? She seems to like telling people what to do.”
He smirked and responded, “Yeah, she is. She leaves me to keep an eye on things when she goes to do whatever she does out there. Anywho, follow me. I need to see how good you are.”
I rose an eyebrow, but obeyed. I followed him to the same area where Elon was fighting his opponent. The crowd still stood there, laughing and joking. They got louder when they saw Ebi and I making our way to the dueling area. I made brief eye contact with Elon. He was surprised to see me here as well. The crowd gathered around us in a circle just like they did to Elon. I couldn't make out many words, but from the looks of their faces, they were placing bets.
“Alright. Take out your knife.” Ebi said as he turned around and unsheathed his black blade. I believe the shopkeeper called it “Darkheart” as that was the sword I asked about when I met Shar. It shone with white light, shooting out in all directions and spinning.
I took a few steps back and pulled out my Magma Sword. The familiar weight was a comfort in this unfamiliar environment. The crowd was making my heart race faster. I should've expected a duel.
“Ready?” asked a man who stepped up. He rose his right hand in the air between us. Elon didn't wait another moment. He said,“Ready.”
Well. Here goes nothing. What's my plan? His sword is longer than mine, but it's also slightly thinner. I could attempt to throw my knife. From this distance of about 5 meters, aiming shouldn't be too difficult. Or I could charge in for melee combat. Ebi looked confident. He gave his sword a test swing while we waited for me reply. By the way he carried it, the sword was extremely light weight for its size. Light weight means quick. Quick mean difficult to react to in melee combat. I will try to throw my knife. And see what he does. If he charges in for melee, I can maybe only throw 1 more knife. If he also attempts to throw his sword at me, I'll need to be quick to dodge it, or be quick to deflect it. I've found my plan.
“Ready.” I said with my new found confidence. The man looked at me and back to Ebi. He threw down his hand and shouted, “Begin!”
I lifted my right arm and threw my knife as fast as I could. Ebi didn't even flinch as my knife missed him. He lifted his own arm. He was going to throw it. I moved to my left and quickly as I could. My knife returned. Ebi released his own blade. It whistled through the air. Dodging was impossible, it was heading straight for me even though I moved. He aimed for where I was going, not where I was. I needed to deflect it. I lifted my arm upwards to deflect his knife into the air. My knife made contact his with his sword!! Except it didn't. His sword went straight through my Magma Sword without even slowing down. ...What? How? I'm sure I saw it touch my knife, how was it not affected? I didn't have time to answer my own question when my torso was sliced in half with ease. In the moment I was conscious, I could feel the burning white light exploding from my skin. The crowd went wild.

I awoke just a few seconds later. I was standing right before the fire pit that still smoldered. I could hear the cheering of the roughly 20 people not too far away. The seen replayed in my mind but it still didn't make any sense. How had his sword gone through mine? I sat down by the fire to contemplate.
