My best of 10 training match with Elon was cut short when Mebi stormed into the camp. My hand felt numb from the constant collisions. Both Elon and I were breathing heavily, but the oxygen rich air quickly restored our stamina. Elon’s sunglasses had a scratch on the left side and his red hat was nicked. That's all the damage I could inflict for this round before we were interrupted. I had a small cut on my left hand when I made the mistake of trying to dual wield such a small weapon. Ebi was observing our training before he turned toward Mebi.
Mebi didn't wait for everyone's attention, she simply said loudly and clearly, “Follow me. We are going training. All of you.” She left the camp once more without even resting, leaving us all confused. In order to get information from her, we were forced to to follow. Our group of 24 people walked through the gate and around the left side of the camp. Lin was skipping around without a care in the world, weaving in between people as they walked. Ebi, however, was the first to catch up to Mebi.
I was just able to overhear him ask, “Where are we going? This isn't the way to the valley.”
Mebi answered, “Gonna be honest with you. It's a dungeon. The lot of you are going to clear it out.”
Ebi gave an even more confused look. “Dungeons don’t exist. We have explored everywhere; there is nothing but trees for miles.”
Mebi wasn't in the mood for discussion. She said with a hint of irritation, “Then we clearly haven't explored everywhere, hm? Just do your job and make sure 2old doesn't ambush us on our way there. Otherwise, anyone who died would get sent back to camp. And that's just a hassle. Keep everyone together.”
Ebi lowered his eyebrows and frowned. He had spent a great deal of time scouting the forests, finding nothing but a few abandoned, broken down houses. He didn't like the idea that he missed something.
I wasn't too concerned about where we were going, though. I had my focus on watching the forest that felt like it was repeating itself. I heard Mebi say “Make sure 2old doesn’t ambush us.” what did she mean by that? Why would one man ambush a party of over twenty? Could he be that powerful? All of I sudden I found myself almost admiring him for his bravery. Or stupidity. But if he was smart enough to plan an ambush, surely he was smart enough not to do it alone. So, I might as well probe for information. I sped up slightly to catch up to Ebi as he was walking backwards taking a head count. I waited for him to count the last 8 before I asked.
“Who is 2old?”
Ebi looked at me oddly with his ice blue eyes and replied, “In order to answer your question, it's going to need some backstory.” He spoke up and talked to Mebi, who he knew was listening in on our conversation. “How long do we have before we are there?”
“Roughly 4 hours. Traveling with so many people slows us down.”
Ebi let out a low whistle and moved his right hand through his black hair. “Plenty of time. Alright, Butter. In this world there are really just two major bands of people. Most everyone else is just in small groups of two or three. Or even alone. But anyway, there is us, who side with Mebi. And there are others who side with 2old.” He went on as we walked side by side, dodging around pine trees in our path. “For a long while now, our two alliances have been competing for dominion over this realm…. Of course, this is challenging because neither side can completely destroy the other. They keep coming back. Mebi is my sister, so naturally I side with her. Same with Lin, even though I don't think he had a choice in his mind. Speaking of which….” He glanced backwards at the group of people trailing behind us. He did another head count, including Lin who was now practicing his knife tricks. Ebi returned his attention to me. “So as I was saying, we are feuding factions. Each of us are trying to get the upper hand on the other. That's what Mebi meant when she said 2old might ambush us. But we are pretty far away from the main roads now, i don't think we need to worry about it.”
I stepped back to let this information stew in my head. That makes sense. So 2old most likely wasn't going to attack alone. I was almost relieved that such a powerful person didn't exist. But technically, if someone were to become a good enough fighter, it was possible. The sight of Syntrax’s knife pinned to the truck flashed in my mind. Surely it was possible. That filled me with determination to become an even better fighter.
I turned around and saw Syntrax walking alongside TT. Neither was talking, so I figured I'd start a conversation.
“Hey, Syntrax, do you know where we are going?” He looked at me.
“Hey, Champ, call me Adam. And no, I don't.”
“Oh, alright, Adam. I overheard that we are going to a dungeon. Do you have any idea what that means?”
“Nope.” He then kicked the trunk of a convenient pine tree for no apparent reason.
I then asked TT, “How about you?”
She shrugged and answered with, “I've heard rumors that there are strong creatures in dungeons, but nobody who went in really came out.”
I rose an eyebrow, “If nobody came out, how did you hear of the rumors?”
She looked at me and said, “Because others waited for very long periods of time outside of then for their friends to return.”
“That makes sense. But if nobody came out, why does Mebi want us to train there?” I stepped around a cluster of identical pines.
TT once more looked at me and replied in a serious tone,”Because in there, we need to fight our hardest. There is no holding back if the rumors are true; we either fight and win, or be trapped forever. Or dead forever. Who knows.”
With that, she took a few steps away, keeping to herself as we walked.
Done with conversation for now, I followed TT's lead and stuck to myself and my own thoughts. I slowly fell to the back of the train of people. Somehow, I feel more comfortable when I can keep an eye on everyone. We continued to walk for about 4 hours.
