Cash:32After my incident with Elon, the cut on the side on my arm has healed completely. Even the cloth has stitched back together. That was 3 hours ago. Now, I'm behind one of the wooden buildings, tossing my knife into the distance. The small grey knife has become very familiar to me now. Its weight feels like an extension of my arm. I've been testing how far I could throw it, how quick I can throw it, and how it spins when it flies. I don't want to be caught off guard by someone again. I hated being on the defensive. I hated being pushed back. I hated how it seemed I was being toyed with. I'm sure Elon could've killed me many times over again in that fight if he so desired.
That's why I'm training. The knife feels good in my hands now. It feels as a weapon should. It's a comfort. I feel as if I'm the one in control of the blade. The blade isn't the one who is protecting me, i am protecting myself. I have gained new confidence in my ability to throw my knife. It's still a little difficult to perfect, but I've got the distance down. Just to make sure, I spotted an abnormally large weed sticking out of the ground. For a second I judged the distance and then threw my knife. It sailed through the air for 2 seconds before I saw the weed being cut in half. I nodded to myself as the knife came into my hand once more.
"Kill or be killed. At least I'm comfortable with defending myself.." I spoke to myself, even though noise was risky with the people I can still hear battling. Sooner or later, I'm going to join them. I day dreamed about my battle with Elon. I can't shake looking back at my mistakes and criticizing what I could have done better or differently. Even though I won that battle, I know that eventually I will falter and lose my life. And maybe come back... I never saw a trace of Elon after he died, which both worries me and relieves me.
I looked up toward where the tall weed was. It has returned. Just like everything in this world. From the knives, to the plants, to possibly even the people. Though I've never witnessed it, I've experienced dying and returning. Not a pleasant feeling, but still intriguing nonetheless.
The sound of sudden wind interrupted my thoughts. Instantly on guard, I peaked around the corner of the building. Across the opening between the buildings, a blue glow manifested. I rested my hand on the knife that was safely in its sheath. I was prepared to draw if I had to. After a few seconds of watching the blue orb, I recognized the shape of a person being formed. The blue subsided, leaving a girl in a blue shirt, and jeans. She had pitch black hair. A mask covered her mouth and nose. A pair of sharp horns sticking out of her head and bat-like wings coming from her back. Her eyes flickered open to reveal unnervingly black eyes.
"Dammit!" she yelled, startling me. I wasn't expecting that response to being rebirthed. "How does she keep killing me?! Ugh!" She seemed upset. But I heard the key words I needed. "How does she keep killing me." This proves that you always come back when you die. You are rebirthed inside that blue bubble. That lifted a huge weight off my chest. That means Elon is still alive, somewhere. And because you come back when you die, that means I have nothing to lose.
I walked out of my hiding place as the girl stomped in the other direction towards the crane.
"Hey!"
I had barely gotten the word out of my mouth before she whipped around and unsheathed her knife, no, her sword. It was as black as her eyes. And oddly enough it produced little bubbles that float around it. Her sword pointed straight at me. She glanced down at the knife in my hand, and back up at me. She lowered her sword. Clearly a man with a knife couldn't defeat her when she had that sword that seemed to almost eat up the light around it.
"Huh. A nooby. What's your name?"
I countered,"What's yours'?"
She saw that coming. "Your life, if you don't answer my question." Damn she is good.
I chuckled at that witty remark and answered.
"I'm Buttermanz. And you are?"
She straightened her back and said "I'm Sharlene. You can call me Shar for short." She said it with such friendliness that it completely contrasted her earlier aggressiveness. I nearly forgot she was still holding a deadly weapon in her hand.
I went straight for the first question that came to my mind. "Can you fly with those wings?"
"What, these? No, unfortunately. They are just decoration. I wish."
Now for the second question that came to my mind.
"How can I get a sword like yours? I'm stuck with this knife." She looked surprised.
"There's.... Alright, there is a shop that way and across the road. It's one of the few buildings here that isn't an abandoned house. You can't miss it." She pointed with her left hand down a path between the tall chain link fence and a wooden wall. Beyond that, I could see the road she mentioned.
"Oh. Well thank you for the directions. I'll be sure to check it out."
"Don't mention it." was all she said before she took off running towards the path she pointed to. Before she got to the road, she turned a corner around a building and disappeared from sight.
That went smoothly. She doesn't have any reason to lie. And if I can return from death an unlimited number of times, there's no reason I shouldn't check it out. I walked cautiously down the path that Shar took just moments before. I kept my back against the wall and silently shuffled down. I could hear a blue resurrection bubble bringing another person back to life nearby. I've reached the end of the wall now and the sound of the bubble died away just a few seconds ago. I silently wait to ambush my prey. They respawn right? There's no reason not to kill them. It'll just be a mild annoyance. I heard the footsteps coming closer. Closer. Closer. Now! I turned the corner and stabbed my dagger into the unknowing person.
"What the-" and then they disappeared. Simple as that. It was much easier to kill that person than it was for Elon. Then again, this poor guy never saw it coming.
Shar said across the road. So let's cross. I looked both ways out of instinct and raced across to the other side. There were no moving cars, of course, but I wanted to make sure I was not seen by anyone wanting to bring harm. I slid around to the back side of the abandoned house into a narrow alley. Boy, It sure would suck to get surprise attacked here.... Speak of the devil. A person wearing a black jacket and hair that looked strangely like bacon turned a corner down the alley. My heart stopped for a moment. I rose my knife over my head and flung it. The guy rose his knife to meet mine. Just after I threw my knife, I sprinted towards him. His momentary distraction by my knife was enough. My knife returned and I stabbed him before his long orange blade could so much as move. I felt blood drip down my wrist, but it was gone as soon as the body was. Without a moment to lose, I raced to the end of the alleyway where a long flat building lay. To the left there was a doorway. And to the right was an open space with an empty slab of concrete.
This didn't look like an abandoned house, so this might just be the building Shar was talking about. I went left and dashed inside. A short corridor an I entered a room full of shelves and a shopkeeper in the corner.
"Hello, Buttermanz! Have you come to buy something?" The person asked with a huge smile.
"How do you know my name?" I asked. I had never seen him before. He had a bald head, dark chocolate skin and wore an apron.
"Don't ask me, I just work here." he replied.
"If you say so. Yeah... Ii've come to buy." I stepped up to the counter and looked over my shoulder to the open entrance.
"Don't worry, your safe in here. There is a spell on the room that sticks knives to theirs sheaths. You may not have noticed, but your knife is no longer in your hand." The man was right.
"Alright so.... How much for the black sword?"
"Black sword? Oh! You mean the Dark Heart? Sorry, pal, but that is WAY out of your budget. I suggest you buy the knife "Circuit" and "Cyber" next. Those are more within your price range." He pointed toward two knives that looked much like my knife but with a few color changes. I picked one up and tested its weight. Exactly the same as the one I currently have.
"Would you like to buy that one?" He asked politely.
I thought for a moment. "No, I'll stick with what I have for now. How much money do I have, anyway?" I was genuinely curious.
"You have killed 3 people. You earn 20 cash per kill. You have thrown 277 knives. You earn 3 cash per thrown knife. You have melee attacked 4 times. You get 2 cash per melee attack. For all of this, you have a total of 899 cash." He spoke with absolute certainty. I rose an eyebrow at his oddly specific knowledge of me, but I let it slide.
"So what is the most valuable knife I can buy with that?"
"That would be the Magma Sword." He lifted it from under the counter and placed it on top. It was slightly bigger than the knife I currently had. I lifted it and realized it had much better balance as well. It would spin much better. "Would you also like to look at abilities?"
"Abilities?" That sounds good.
"Yes. Abilities. They are special properties I can infuse with your weapon or your body to improve
your performance in battle. Currently, you can purchase the Oof ability, Anti-gravity, Sonic, Blinking, or Ghost knife abilities." That was a lot to follow.
"Alright whatever. I'll take the Oof ability."
He chuckled and said, "That will be 5 cash."
"Only 5?"
"Only 5."
"Alright, I'll take it." I didn't want to leave the shop empty handed. I might as well buy the Magma Sword while I'm here. The clerk rubbed his hands together and clapped.
"It is done."
"What is done?"
"You now have the Oof ability."
"Oh. Alright. I'll also take the Magma Sword."
"Ah. Nice choice...Here you are."
I gave the knife a couple test flips in the air. It landed easily back into the palm of my hand with yet another perfect grip.
"Thank you."
"Come back any time... hehehe."End of chapter 2
