The dirt path to the camp flew by as we sprinted. My arm repaired itself after just five minutes. I was lucky I didn't have to run the whole way with such a pain. I am also glad for the fact that though limbs can be removed, bleeding out is impossible. Otherwise, I'm sure I would've kicked the bucket long ago. Our party of three arrived at the camp breathless, expecting a brawl but finding none. We got here on time.
The camp was busy with anticipation. Everyone was looking at their blades, double checking they are using their preferred ability. A couple, including Mebi, had put on their face masks.
Ebi shouted above the commotion, "2old's party will be here any minute! Get into your positions!"
We had just caught our breath when the command to prepare for combat was sounded. All 24 people in the camp began taking ambush positions on either side of the gate. Because it opens inward, it would hide our presence long enough for most of the party to get in. Once they are, we will have the element of surprise to help us crush their larger numbers. Simple but effective plan. Plans that are too complicated have much greater chances of failure.
As we waited, nobody said a word. The camp was dead silent, waiting. I hid on the left side of the gate. Only Mebi stood in the center of camp, just in front of the fire pit. She said we would know when to strike. She would be the distraction, the bait. I thought it was an odd ploy for our leader to be the bait, but i made no objections. So long as everyone from the other side returns to fight again. I eyed Mebi cautiously. I didn't want to see someone die. Rain's death was easy enough for me to handle... mostly because she almost didn't seem human anymore. She was so emotionless that perhaps killing her forever was more of a gift than a punishment.
The sound of footsteps on the other side of the wall dragged me out of my thoughts. They were here. Mebi was standing casually, spinning her dark scissors around on a finger. She seemed uninterested in the group that was approaching. Is acting careless a part of her plan? Or is she really unintimidated by the sound of 60 feet coming our way?
They were now at the gate looking in. They see Mebi standing there. Each and every one of them hesitated. Did they know it was trap? Heh it is pretty obvious, isn't it? They were expecting a formidable force and all that was here is just Mebi. I'm not even sure Mebi could take on all of these people on her own unless they came at her just a few at a time.
A single pair of footsteps separated from the group and walked slowly towards Mebi. That must be 2old.
The person spoke in a calm, almost teasing way. "Where's the rest of your group, Mebi? Don't tell me you scared them off?"
I peeked out from behind the door to look at the man. He wore a colorful shirt with black sleeves and had rings of red fabric around his wrists. From behind, it looked like he was wearing sunglasses. He had short spiky black hair.
"Long time no see, 2old. What brings you to my camp?" Mebi asked in a conversational voice.
2old answered in a light tone of small talk. "Not much. I just heard some rumors that you have found an extraordinarily powerful weapon and I came to have a look."
Mebi stopped spinning her scissors and lifted an eyebrow at 2old. "Rumors? My, that was fast. It was supposed to be a surprise. Well, it's no rumor. These scissors i have here are quite exquisite..." She lifted her scissors out for 2old to see, but he stood still where he was instead of approaching to have a closer look.
Now it was 2old's turn to raise an eyebrow. "Those scissors are what i have come all this way to see?" Mebi nodded her head and smiled innocently. "Well that's odd. I heard it was a huge scimitar that dripped water. Oh well. Might as well go home..."
2old unsheathed his blade and threw it behind him without even looking. One of our members who were hiding stuck out too much from behind the right side of the gate and was pinned to the wall by three Darkhearts. Two others missed but got relatively close. 5 knives? I could've sworn I saw him only throw one. Did it split up as soon as it left his hand?
2old spoke once more. "As soon as we have cleaned up your friends here."
If anything would be a que to attack, that would be it. We mostly lost our advantage of stealth, but we also have another advantage. If we die, we respawn inside the camp again, even if we can't draw out our knives for 10 seconds after returning as a penalty. If we kill 2old's group, they will respawn wherever else.
Battle exploded. People rushed into the camp and we rushed from behind the doors. My first opponent was a girl in an oversized hoodie. She had very light brown skin cat ears and a tail, and huge sparkling wings popping out of her back. She had black tights and combat boots. Her Darkheart glowed an azure purple with what looked light darker purple lightning encircling it. The first thing she did was throw her blade, I deflected it to the side with a quick slash of my magma sword, but watched in awe as I bounced off of the wooden wall behind me perfectly back into her hand. Her blade returns to her after it is thrown? Interesting. She threw it again, this time it bounced off the ground and nicked the outside of my left thigh. It's like I am fighting two enemies at once, one behind me and one in front. But just from the way those two knives threw, I could tell that the blades flew along a straight path back to the place they were thrown. So as long as I don't back track to the path that the knife took as it went past the first time, the weapon won't hit me as it returns along the same path. If I remember this, it is just like fighting a normal person.
The third time she threw her knife, I wasted no time in going for melee combat. I dodged to the left to make sure her knife didn't hit me from behind. She had just enough time to grab her sword and counter my attack. We exchange a few strokes before I finally nicked her arm with the tip of my Magma Sword. I became invisible. I don't know why, I don't know how, but I became invisible without dealing a killing blow like all the previous times I have used it. Then I recalled the words of the store clerk. "When it touches blood, it turns you invisible and makes your movement 3 times faster for 4 seconds." I didn't need to kill someone. It only needed to touch blood!
I blinked at my opponent's bewildered face, her brown eyes wide. To her, I disappeared before her very eyes. If she looked down, she would still see my magma blade only partially transparent. I sliced my blade once to knock her knife that was held in a defensive position out of my way and swung a second time to kill her. I still had a couple seconds of ghost mode left, I need to make it count. I dashed off into the fray, a couple knives nearly hit me as I searched for my next target. Before I even fixed my eyes of them, my blade was already cutting through the flesh of a distracted person.
Just after my cut exited out of the other side of their torso, my ghost mode wore off. Crap. But now I know I don't need to kill someone to reactivate it. I stabbed my blade into the head of my most recent kill before they disappeared to get a touch of blood. Once again, I was as fast as the wind. Flashes of sunlight reflecting on steel went past my vision as I weaved in between duels, killing the one I didn't recognize as I went. In the 4 seconds I was given, I had killed another three people. Perhaps we could win this even while outnumbered after all. I took a glance toward where I last saw 2old and Mebi. They were still killing each other. Each time 2old threw his knife, it split into a tidal wave of sharp metal flying at Mebi. Somehow, Mebi was deflecting and dodging the knives as they came with just her tiny pair of scissors. Each time 2old's blades got close, two or three blades were deflected into the air and Mebis scissors shot out from the opening to attack 2old. She didn't have time for too much fancy stuff like she did with Rain because she needed her scissors to help her survive the next volley.
I was curious as to why she wasn't using Rain's sword until I remembered what happened to Rain. Anyone who dies while wielding a weapon that can kill forever also dies forever. So if Mebi wanted to kill 2old, she would switch to Rain's scimitar before making the killing blow to minimize her risk of dying forever as she tried to kill him.
She blocked 3 more of 2old's knives and threw her knife through the opening, this time it landed straight in his forehead. He fell over forwards. He wasn't dead forever, he wasn't killed by Rain's sword. But all around, his companions were breaking out of combat and fleeing at seeing their leader killed. They heard what Mebi said, they believe 2old is dead forever. A few made it out of the camp and a few others were killed as they turned to run. One person in particular caught my eye. She was someone who I've seen before. She spoke a few words I was unable to hear to Adam before she, too fleed. But she didn't make it out of the gate in time.
The girl I recognize as Shar was being dragged back to the center of camp by a pair of scissors latched onto one of her horns. She struggled to free herself but Mebi's scissors were tightly clamped. The scissors released Shar when she was a equal distance between her and Mebi. Shar stood up, she looked the same as before. Black hair, black eyes and a blue shirt. And of course her unforgettable horns and wings. She looked at Mebi with anger in her her eyes.
Despite Shar's anger, Mebi was the first to speak. "We meet again, Shar. I assume your being here means that you have sided with 2old."
Shar answered. "Hell yeah it does. I'm not siding with you. Especially after you just killed 2old and dragged me halfway across your camp."
"2old isn't dead." Mebi announced bluntly.
Shars eyes went from narrowed in hate to wide in surprise. "But... we saw you..."
"You really think these tiny scissors are capable of killing someone forever? Don't make me laugh." Mebi switched from her black scissors to the sinister blade I won't forget. But why did Mebi prevent Shar from escaping? I have a bad feeling about this.
"This is the blade that you heard about." Mebi showed off the blade, turning it at different angles. "But. This blade isn't just for show. I need to show 2old and the rest of his followers that I'm wasn't merely joking when I said I was going to rule this world no matter what."
My heart skipped a beat. Mebi was going to kill Shar.
Mebi continued to talk. "You know, I really could have killed 2old back there if I wanted to. But instead... I think I want to bleed him out. Take out his followers one by one until he gives in. And hehe." Mebi chuckled, "I've got to start somewhere." Mebi lifted the blade and pointed it towards Shar with an extended arm.
"W-wait!" Adam came out from the crowd and stood in front of Shar. "You can't kill Shar."
Mebi smiled at him. "What's this? Why have you so suddenly grown protective of a member of 2old's group?"
Adam's eyes shifted to the ground and then back into Mebi's red eyes. "I love her. And I'm not going to let you kill her. Not permanently."
"Oooh. I see. So I suppose you're the one who spread rumors about this blade in my hand to 2old's group?" Mebi's eyes stared right into Adam's. He swallowed and nodded his head.
Mebi's smile turned into a smug smirk. "That would make you a traitor, would it not? A traitor to my cause. A traitor to your friends around you... I don't take kindly to cowards. I should kill you both." The blood drained from Adam and Shar's faces. Nobody in the crowd dsred to breath less they, too, become Mebi's next target.
"N-no, wait. Kill me and let Shar go."
Shar looked at him like he was insane. "Adam, no! Don't do this!" Adam ignored her pleas.
"Mebi, you called me a coward. I am doing this out of love for someone else, my last action to stray from my roots and stand up for the one thing I love in this world." Adam glanced back at Shar, her eyes filling with tears. "If you don't kill me here and now, you'll only be proving your own cowardice."
Mebi lowered to sword and rose an eyebrow. "Well said, Adam. For that, I will grant your wish. You die now and Shar lives to die another day. Say your last words and draw your sword."
Shar now wasn't the only one with tears. Adam was also crying. Shar spoke in a quiet, broken voice, "Adam... don't do this. Let me fight her, I can beat her. I-...." She collapsed into tears on Adam's shoulder. He wrapped his arms around her. He said in an equally quiet voice, "I need to do this. You and I both know we can't beat her. There's no other way... I want you to know that I love you. Beat her up for me."
I felt the burn of tears forming in my own eyes. Mebi was going to tear these two apart. I can't let this happen, but my body refuses to move. Adam released Shar and faced Mebi. She once again rose her sword. Adam unsheathed his rainbow sword and pointed it at Mebi. Adam once again whispered,"...I love you Shar." and stepped toward Mebi. His foot barely hit the ground when Rain's blade shattered Adam's sword and ran him through to the hilt. The tip of the blade was inches away from Shar's face, so she was splattered by the blood. Adam stumbled a couple steps before falling to the ground, face first.
The heart-wrenching scream of grief filled the air. Shar ran to Adam's body, but it disappeared as soon as she touched it. She had seen Adam for the last time.
"Mebi.... You will regret the day you crossed my path. Remember these words for all time. Determination is a vital part of me. Determination that is incorruptible. Your annihilation will be unavoidable. Take a last look around while you're alive, Mebi. You're in for the fight of your life."
With tear-filled eyes, Shar lifted her face mask over her mouth and nose and exploded into action. She unsheathed her darkheart that now gleamed a dark red aura. Mebi now switched to her scissors, keeping true to her promise. Shar and Mebi danced in melee combat. Shar was quick, her darkheart a blur of motion, but Mebi was faster still, blocking every slice that came her way. But Shar stopped doing regular slashes, she now released her knife in a throw at almost point blank range. Instantly, her one knife became five. Just like 2old. Now with each slash, she is hitting Mebi with the force of not one knife, but five. Mebi was being pushed back, her little pair of scissors couldn't handle the stress of the strikes and broke into two halves. Each one zipped in front of Mebi, blocking strikes as they went. But not even this was enough. Shar kept push faster and faster, more knives piled in front of Mebi. Darkhearts were appearing faster than they could disappear. 10,15,20 blades flying in the in all dIrections as Mebi struggled to fend off her ferocious foe. The knives stopped flying. Mebi's scissors fell to the ground. Shar had a blade sticking into her heart and Mebi four sticking into her torso. They both fell over, dead.
I was in shock. Nobody had killed Mebi before. Not even Rain. Though Mebi was killed, she isn't dead forever. She will be back...
I can't stay here. I can't stand to look at Mebi's murderous face. I need to find 2old. He and his group are the only one with the manpower to stop Mebi from killing more innocents. I needed to go before Mebi came back. I walked out of the camp with tears in my eyes. Nobody should see the person they loved be killed before their eyes.
