hapter 9: having a sister won't be so bad afterall

After a few minutes of standing by the car alone, my dad finally comes and he doesn't say anything as he unlocks the car and we both get in.

I'm probably gonna catch a cold because I am freezing.

I start shivering in the passenger seat as I rub my bare arms with my hand.

My dad switches the air conditioner on just as we drive home.

"Zanda" dad says and I don't reply just as I'm facing the window with my head against it.

"I'm in love with Corletta, I've been in love with her for 2 years now, I just need you to know that I trust her and she's a great person, I just hope that you understand that she makes me happy" my dad says to me but I don't say anything.

We drive for a few more minutes until we reach the house and he parks in the garage. I open the door and I rush in the house before my dad can talk to me.

"Zanda" he says just as I walk up the stairs, totally ignoring him.

I get upstairs and I take a nice long warm bath while listening to music.

After bathing I go into my room. Now I'm make up free and my pale face just looks exhausted and I cannot wait to sleep.

I wear my black socks and pyjamas just as I get into bed and I close my eyes.

After a few minutes, my dad knocks but I don't reply just as the door opens and i pretend to be asleep.

He walks into my room and he kneels before me as he looks at me but I shut my eyes.

"Its our duty as parents to raise our kids well. Discipline comes in different ways in each and every family. I hit you because I care and I feel that that's the only way I can get you to obey me. You might not understand now , but you will, once you get older. I don't mean to be so hard on you, but you make me. You make me do this. I love you and your mom forever and always and nothing can ever replace you guys, I want you to always know that. I love you." Dad kisses my cheek and brushes my hair just as he exits my room and leaves me crying.

The next day

I woke up the next day with a terrible headache. Must have been from all that crying.

I went into the bathroom and got ready for the day. 

After I was done. I went into the kitchen and I found my dad making breakfast.

"Morning baby" he said to me as he flips the egg.

"Hi" I said dryly as I say by the island.

We eat our food as dad tries to make a conversation with me, but I just listen and shrug.

"Can we talk about yesterday" he says, more like a statement and not a question.

"Look. I get that you're afraid because it's always just been Zanda and daddy and now we are gonna have a big family and that scares you, I understand. But baby, don't you wanna see me happy? Do you honestly think I'd marry Corletta if she was some stuck up evil person? No, I would never. I'm choosing to marry her because she gives me love, she gives me happiness, she is a good woman with a beautiful heart, she is amazing and I know she already loves you like her own. You don't have to be afraid baby, I'll always be your daddy first and you'll always be my little baby girl. Even though Corletta and I may have another kid, you'll always be the first reason why I was ever called a father in the first place. You are very special to me because I have a piece of Maddy when I have you. It's amazing to see the creation that Maddy and I have always dreamt about and I get to see you everyday becoming this strong beautiful woman and sometimes it shocks me that i managed to do this all on my own. My point is baby that you don't have to overthink this, you don't have to be afraid. Just please give them a chance, for me please baby" dad says and I just look at him not knowing what to say.
