Chapter 10: balcony conversations

We are all seated at the table as we have mini conversations with each other.

Conner doesn't talk much and he doesn't seem to like me. I wonder why, I'd be ok with it if it was someone else, but he is soon to be my step brother and we have to be civil for our parent's sake. He is always looking down on his phone and not paying attention to anything that's around.

"Honey get off your phone, that's very rude" Corletta says to a very ignorant Conner.

Chasidy takes the phone and puts it on the table as Conner eyes her then he huffs.

"Ok so, you guys have one whole week left of vacation then you go back to school, so Don and I have decided that on Sunday, tomorrow, we will go out of the state for fun and we will have lots of fun, we booked a hotel room, a walking distance from the beach and we will go to amusement parks, yay how exciting. Our first family vacation." Corletta says sounding very excited. Compared to us girls, Chasidy and I, Corletta is way too girly.

"Wow mom, that's awesome" Chasidy says and we all are happy but Conner just takes his phone and ignores everyone.

"Conner I will not ask you to put your phone down again" Corletta says but Conner just ignores her.

"Your mother is talking to you boy" my dad says getting agitated.

"Conner!" Chasidy yells at him.

"What the fuck do y'all want from me? I'm here aren't I?" Conner says and we all look at him.

"Boy you better watch your..." dad says as Conner cuts him off.

"Oh really, what you gonna do? You're not my dad" Conner says as he storms off and he leaves the backyard.

"Conner!!!" Corletta and Chasidy yell for him.

"I'll go mom it's okay" Chasidy says as she follows Conner.

"Don, I'm so sorry" Corletta says.

"Don't worry babe, he'll come around." Dad says to her as he kisses her hand.

After lunch, it's time for Corletta and the twins to leave, my dad and I have to go shopping tomorrow. I'm kinda sad that Chasidy is leaving, she is my first real friend, I really like her and we get along well. I'm excited to call her my sister.

"Today was fun, so Chasidy and I are gonna go shopping for clothes tomorrow and we'd like to take Zanda with if that's ok with you Don?" Corletta asks my dad. I've never been out without my dad before.

"Uhmmm I don't know..." my dad says still thinking about it.

"C'mon Donnie, just a girls day out, get to know each other, get our hair done, our nails and get a few clothes." Corletta begs my dad. My dad just looks at me still not sure of what to say.

"You can come with" Corletta offers.

"No, hell no, it's fine, she can go, you'll be fine right?" My dad asks me and I nod with a very big grin on my face.

Who is this and what have they done with my strict dad. Did he just agree for me to go out to the mall all by myself, well not all by myself but without him besides me. What is happening to the world. Seems like a lot of things are about to change for me.

"Ok well I'll just drive there I guess, what time?" I ask them

"Oh don't be silly honey, we'll pick you up at 2:30." She says as she kisses my dad goodbye and they all leave.
