I woke up to the sun streaming through my window. Another summer day. I felt like I needed to be happy, but I felt drained like an empty can of coca-cola. It felt like I had a constant raincloud over my head.
There was a new text from Jai.
Jai: Meet in the city in half an hour, I have a surprise for you <3
Julia: I'l be there <3
I felt my mood lighten a little as I opened up my closet and skimmed my eyes through the racks of clothes. I picked out some sky blue skinny jeans, a flowing coral tanktop and some tan boots. I picked up my phone and pulled on a stack of multicoloured bracelets.
I padded into the white tiled bathroom and stared at my reflection.
My eyes were a sad blue that were full of secrets and my wavy golden hair flowed over my shoulders neatly. I lightly brushed mascara on my eyes and rubbed watermelon flavour lip balm across my lips. Flipping my hair one last time I walked out the door and started running.
From the pain, from the hurt, from my life.
I didn't stop till I reached the underground train station and walked to the platform where the train was wheezing to life after pulling up at the station.
I watched the landscape fly past and mix into a blurr of colours. Skyscrapers touched the clouds, taxis honked in the busy streets, people toured the streets, marvelling at the big city.
I stepped onto the metal platform and found myself trapped in a huge crowd of people, making their way out of Flinders Street Station. I could finally breathe after I stepped out of the suffocating smell of perfume and colonge.
Jai was standing on the steps, turning his head in every direction as if he was looking for someone.
Me.
I broke into a run and leaped down the stairs two at a time until I was wrapped in his sweet embrace and then broke out into tears.
"Hey, whats the matter, your safe with me," he held my face in his hands and wiped my tear stained cheeks.
"Your ok," he rested his head on my hair and held me, like he was never going to let go.
"Don't leave me."
"I never did, I was always there," he stroked my cheek softly and smiled.
"Guess what were doing today?"
"I don't know," I grinned, wiping my eyes.
"Go throw up milk in some random alleyway."
He laughed and took my hand.
"No, were going busking."
"Really?" my face lit up.
"Lets do this."
"Yeah, buddy," Jai threw his snapback hat into the air and caught it, making people turn around and stare.
I giggled and clapped playfully.
We walked down the black cobbled path hand in hand, staring in at the clear shop windows.
We turned down a narrow alleyway. A wall of grafiti stood out among the bland grey walls, bright drawings of flowers, people and animals cascaded down the wall in a colourful mix.
I snapped some pictures until Jai stole my phone and started taking selfies, doing a different pose in each picture.
"Your adorable."
"I know," he said in a girly voice, lifting the phone high above my head..
"Jaii," I whined.
I pulled the snapback hat over his eyes, pulled his arm down and grabbed the phone out of his daunting hand.
He slipped his arms around my waist as I squealed and giggled, trying to break free of his strong grasp.
"I gotcha."
I wriggled around in his strong grasp, trying to escape.
"Just one picture," he begged.
"Fine," I giggled and smiled at my phone as Jai rested his chin on my shoulder, looking up with big eyes.
"Your such a poser."
He stuck his tongue out and turned to face me, snapping another picture.
"Ok, thats enough," I grabbed the phone and quickly scrolled through the pictures, secretly smiling at my favourite and making it my wallpaper.
I strolled down the path, my finger skimming the rough texture of the wall.
I could hear someone wailing on a guitar up ahead.
A young man was sitting on the ground, playing his honey-coloured guitar, with a guitar case lying on the ground with a couple of silver coins in it.
"Watch this," Jai whispered in my ear as he jogged past.
He walked up to the man and they exchanged a few words. The man, smiling, handed over his guitar.
Jai strummed a few notes and then glanced in my direction, beckoning me over.
I walked uncertainly up to Jai and stood akwardly beside him as people passed us by, shooting us dirty looks.
"Making my way downtown
Walking fast
Faces pass as I'm homebound," Jai broke into A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton.
I had listened to that song a million times and never gotten sick of it.
His fingers danced across the strings of the guitar, his sweet voice making people stop and stare as he turned and looked me straight in the eye.
"If I could fall into the sky
Then maybe time would pass us by," the words floated out of my mouth before I could stop them.
Jai stopped and stared at me as I sang the last few words of the chorus, ignoring the people that were watching us.
"If I could just see you tonight," we sang it in perfect harmony, looking at each other.
People started clapping and throwing notes into the guitar case as me and Jai took a bow.
Jai handed the guitar back to the man and gave him a thumbs up.
"Shit, look out," two policemen came running toward us, their brows furrowed together, pumping their arms, appearing fast.
The man took off around a corner while Jai dragged me into another dark alleyway and pressed me up against the wall, our breathing and pounding hearts the only sound in the dead silent street.
"Are they gone?"
"Yeah, I think so," he sighed.
"I didn't know you could sing."
"You don't know a lot of things about me," I whispered. sliding my knuckles down his cheek.
"Well, I'm learning more every day," he murmured.
"You definietly are."
He tilted my head upward and I felt his lips crush against mine, the sugary watermelon spread in my mout, that tasted like long summer days and endless promises.
"Where have you been all my life," I giggled as I came up for air.
"Right here," Jai replied, tucking a loose strand of my hair safely behind my ear.
" All along."
