| ALFRED SUCKED IN A SHUTTERED, DEEP BREATH—- trying muster up enough courage to confront those that would stand before him. It was so different to be sitting on the throne whether than to the side of it. Everyone stared upon at him, just eagerly waiting for what he had to say. His brother Æthelred stood the side of him while at the ready with his eyes set forward. Alfred quickly sat down, and leaned lazily against the chair, trying to be relaxed as he possibly could be.
Coughs echoed throughout the hall giving into that eerie silence once more. Alfred exhaled deeply once again knowing he had to start it—to start the uproar that is.
" This is my first witan as your new king. I know it will not be easy to follow in my father's and grandfathers footsteps, but nevertheless I shall try my best." Judith slowly walked in from behind, staying to the side in the shadows. Æthelred still stood tall, but some could tell he wasn't quite happy with the decision still.
" We are still gravely threaten by the incursions of the Northman, it is my intention to increase our defenses by building new forts and watchtowers along the coast and rivers. I've also ordered construction on a fleet of new ships. As King, i feel I'm responsibility not only for the lives of our people, but also their souls. So I've ordered all monasteries and religious houses in my realm to teach and offer prayers and lessons in English. My fervent wish is to give knowledge, education, and opportunity to the ordinary Saxon folk."
The bishop and the crowd started objecting, throwing their fists into the air and yelling no. Alfred stood tall on his believes, he wanted everyone to have equal rights in education but others didn't believe that. He knew some saw him as weak but he couldn't let that get to him.
" Sire, forgive me but such matters are not for you to decide. You are the king by Gods grace and with the approval and blessing of our holy church. But in matters of religious practice and observances, you have no more power to challenge the church's authority than to stop the seas tide." The bishop sarcastically remarked which caused the men to start laughing.
Alfred stared down at the Bishop, he was calling him out in front of all these men. Judith could do nothing but watch, her hatred boiled at the man for doubting her son.
