BATTLE FOR MARTON
♗
| THERE LAID BEFORE THEM A VAST FIELD FILLED OF FIRE. A thick blanket of black silt covered the dirt where living grass once took root. There's a stillness to both sides—if hatred was visible in the air it would have been scarlet. The armies of both King Alfred and King Harold stacked in numbers on either side.
But unlike Alfred, Harold paced in front of his army as if he were a rogue animal—his mind overthinking the possibilities. He knew just as well there could only be 2 outcomes and it seemed apparent it were not on his side.
Her heart pounded loudly in her chest—filling her ears with the deathening sound of blood pumping. Her horse's uneasiness rumbled in between her legs before channeling throughout her body. The Saxon army stood at ease behind her—all awaiting for the call to fight. The men wearily fidgeted with their swords and shields with sweat dripping from their foreheads as they awaited this doom.
The flagmen nervously gripped their sweaty hands around the flag pole with their eyes set upon the battlefield. Fear was something all shared in common and it was consuming everything.
Viserya was positioned next to Alfred, after all the King and Queen must go together as one. Though most of the men were confused about seeing their queen to battle, since that wasn't really a thing to them. It were forbidden for the women to fight yet Viserya always found a way. And God forbid Alfred let her out of his sight. But as said before, she held her ground.
Heahmund was beside her to the left, his gestures of gratitude had finally set in. He, having once rebelled against her, finally accepted her for who she was.
He simply nodded when she glanced over to him, perhaps it was her mothers doing that made him change his mind about the way he saw her. Lagertha stood in front of her with Björn, who of course had his back turned to her. But her mothers little smile as she looked back at her helped to ease her confidence in this plan.
