We followed Xion up to our rooms. Just as she had asked, the rooms were right next to each other. Ethan opened the door and almost gasped. It was a nice room with three beds and a long couch. There was a chest of drawers and a t.v. on top of that. On the wall was another door. When I opened it, it was simply another door, I looked to Ethan questiongly.
"It's a door to my room. It makes it possible to simply unlock it and make it one big space. By the way, that couch can be folded out into another bed. I saw it earlier when the cleaning lady was in here."
"Thank you for the room, Miss Xion. We appreciate it." I shook her hand with a smile.
"Actually it's not miss, it's missus." She smiled, her eyebrows raising in a gentle laugh. She reached into her shirt and pulled out a ring on a long chain.
"You're married?" Talon just about yelled. His eyes betraying the hurt.
"I was he died a while back, but that's a story for another time." She sat on the edge of one of the beds and motioned for us to sit as well. "I won't go into great detail but what you need to know about me is that first I'm not human anymore. My husband died and I kinda changed. Basically, I'm way more powerful than I appear, than I used to be. Second, the downside of not being human is that I'm cursed. I'm only allowed to marry one man, if I marry any other, that person will die. Let's just say I learned that one the hard way." She scratched at the back of her head.
The others were still processing what she said, so I decided to change the subject. "So if your name was Aria, why did you change it to Xion?"
She laughed. "I'm an assassin. All assassin's change their name when they get their mark." She pulled down to reveal her intricate tattoo. It was a black dagger surrounded by a circle of leaves, an 'X' was made by grey daggers behind the black one, a deep red rose behind them, a droplet of red below the dagger tip and a crown resting above the hilt of the dagger. It was stunning.
"An assassins tattoo is like the ranking in the military. Each portion of the tattoo represents a different rank or class, as we call them. Rank starts with D-class, which are apprentices fresh from their trial dance, so basically newbies." She pulled out a paper and wrote out 'D-class=newbies'. "Then it goes C-class, they are those who survive their first three months," She wrote 'C-class=survive 3 months'. "B-class survive a year, and A-class are two years however they must take a simple test which is simply to kill an A-class target. A-class targets are murderers, rapists and anyone who have killed civilians." She paused making sure we still understood.
"S-class assassins are your elite. They take on the most dangerous kills, people we call Etos. To explain, if an A-class assassin goes to kill a murderer, but they end up getting killed by that murderer, then the murderer becomes known as an Eto. Eto basically means 'assassin killer', and they are extremely dangerous." She wrote out what she explained. "S-class assassins have to take a test called the 'Dance of Roses', which is an endurance and skill-based dance. It's extremely difficult to keep in step and be as graceful as the test requires."
"Then you have me. If you look, I have a crown on top of the dagger, it's the symbol of the king. Being king simply means you're the most powerful assassin in the guild. In order to become king, you must challenge the king and win. The king can decide whether it's a fight for first blood or a dance battle. If you win you become the next king, in exchange, however, the king cannot retire until they are beaten. My master was the king before me, I battled him in an actual fight. I won and became the next king.
"Lastly there is a part of the tattoo that I do not have. That is the symbol of retirement which is a pair of wings on the outside of the leaves. Anyway, to summarize the tattoo, D-class is the basic dagger, C-class gets the blood droplet, B-class gets the leaves, A-class gets the other grey daggers, S-class gets the rose, King get the crown and you get wings once you retire. Makes sense?" When we nodded a yes, she took a deep breath. "Oh, I forgot, you have to be at least A-class to challenge the King."
'For a group of killers, they sure are organized.' I thought, she immediately looked to me, anger lining her eyes.
"Excuse you we aren't just killers. If we had land of our own, we would be considered our own country, due to having our own language, currency, religion, and other jobs. Yes, there are jobs within the Assassri that aren't assassins." She must've noticed my surprise. "Sorry I'm telepathic, it's actually kind of a pain. You know I didn't explain my name. You asked 'why Xion' so to answer, in Dian, which is our own language," her voice rose, accentuating her displeasure with me, before squishing her lips into a thin line. "Xion means 'shadow walker'. Xite," She wrote out Xite. "which is pronounced 'she-t-ay' not 'z-i-t-ay'," She paused scratching her temple with her fingernail. "sorry common mistake for newbies and apprentices, means shadow. The word Ona means to walk or to sink into. So you put "Xite and Ona together and it becomes Xiteona, which is pronounced 'she-toe-na'. However, you can simply shorten it to Xion and still keep the same meaning. Now 'Xi' should not be confused with 'Shi' which is entirely different. Hopefully, that makes some sense."
"That's actually pretty neat Xion." Talon smiled, intrigued by every word she spoke.
"Well thank you, Tal. Now, Frost, question for you. Are you the kraftig havfrue that I was told about?" She took out the dagger that she used to kill the mugger guy and began to clean it with a cloth that seemed to appear out of nowhere. I nodded with a gulp and she only chuckled. "The water goddess, Vari told me about you, she didn't tell me about your mission in detail, only that it was important. She asked me to give you a little gift." She smiled at me and stood, looking down her nose at me. "What I'm giving you is something that will help you with your mission. It is called 'Kierashi'. Kiera means soul or spirit and Shi, remember not 'x-i' but 's-h-i' means eyes or to look. So Kierashi is called soul-sight and will allow you to see the souls of the living and the dead. I hope you will use my gift wisely."
She kneeled down to me and placed her hands on the sides of my face, bringing our foreheads together. We closed our eyes and Xion whispered a few words in her language. She pulled away with an 'open' and smiled. When I opened my eyes I saw only the outlines of her and my friends and glowing orbs. Xion had three extremely bright golden orbs, each with their own texture. My friends also had two orbs Talon's was a fiery orange, Alto's was a soft silver and Ethan's single orb was an emerald green. Somehow I could tell things about them like information was shoved into my brain.
"Not only did I give you the sight but also my knowledge of what everything means and how it works. You should be able to turn it on and off at will." I did, somehow, know how to turn them off and so I did, blinking away the amazement. "Hopefully they will come in handy later. Now if you don't mind, I'm tired, goodnight boys. Tomorrow we set our sights on L.A.!" She giggled and blew us a kiss as she left. We only smiled back at her.
