I wake to Lamar shaking my shoulder a little. "Stella, Stella, wake up." I hear him say.
I sigh and sit up. I press my hands to my eyes to clear my vision. "What time is it?"
"Almost nine, I'll go get you breakfast. What do you want?"
"Um, a muffin, I guess."
"Okay, I'll be right back." He opens the door and closes it behind him. I get up and stretch. Then, there's a knock on the door.
"Hey! Storm! I heard what you're planning to rank me and I'm here to prove you wrong! Open up!" It sounds like Alice. I feel my eyes widen, I slip under the bed and pull the comp-fitter over the edge of the bed so it hides me better. I slow my breathing and wait for her break in. "Quit acting like you're better than everyone else! I will not be ranked seventh!" I hear banging on the door.
After a few more minutes of Alice banging on the door and yelling I hear Lamar. "Hey! Go away, initiate!"
"What are you doing out here? I thought you were in there!" I here more banging against the door.
"What are you doing here?" Lamar's voice is low.
"I came to talk to you about what I heard you were going to rank me." Alice's voice is high-pitched, it hurts my ears a little.
"Who told you?"
"Steve."
"Stay away from me, got that?"
I don't hear an answer, just foot-steps, likely Alice running away. I hear the door open. "Stella?" He pauses. "Stella where are you?"
I crawl out from under his bed. I look up at him. "What'd you do to her?" I don't sound demanding, I 'm glad I don't.
"Nothing, just scared her off." I look into his eyes, he looks into mine. "I really need to get Steve to leave me alone."
I nod and get up. I walk up to him and wrap my arms around him. I hear the door click closed. Then his hands are on my waist, he pulls me closer to him. "Why hasn't Steve left you alone? I understand he wants you to replace him, but why hasn't he gotten the message?"
"I don't know, I've heard he's clingy, and that I should try to avoid him." His hands move to the small of my back, his arms press against me. "I wish he'd just leave me alone, he's been bothering me about becoming a Dauntless leader since the final rankings."
"Where were you ranked?"
"First, Zach was second, I'm glad he isn't jealous."
"Yeah." I pull away and kiss him, he kisses me back. I move my hands up to his shoulders, the heel of my hand pressing into them. His hands slid up to my face, he holds my head in his hands as we kiss.
After a few minutes, I am loosing my balance, I step back with one foot, I stumble a little. Lamar grabs my arm to keep me up, he looks at me, his expression blank. "What's wrong?" I say.
"Nothing." He pauses. "Are you ready for simulations tomorrow?"
"I don't know." I say. "Going through your fear-landscape has prepared me some, but I don't know what to expect."
"Well, there's heights." Whatever he's trying to make me feel better, doesn't work, I don't want to face more heights. I know I'll have to though, I won't be able to control the fears that show up in the simulations and the ones that don't. But, no-matter what, I'll face every fear I have when I go through my fear-landscape in a few weeks.
