After the Choosing Ceremony ends, the Dauntless begin sprinting down the halls and out of the building, soon finding their way to level with the train tracks. I follow their lead. When I am level with the tracks I hear the train coming, I am ready. I know that the Dauntless jump on and off trains, I've watched them. Some jump in, others pull themselves in with the handles, I plan on the handles option, I'd rather not fall into a pair of Dauntless arms now.
After I pull myself into the train, I am crowded by people in black, and people in blue. Where are the Candor initiates? I can't be the only Candor, almost every year at least 2 Candor switch to Dauntless. I can't be alone.
"Hey, Candor." some random male voice says in my ear. I turn my head to look for where the voice came from. There is a tall boy standing right next to me, his hair is blond with a few dark brown strips placed in no noticeable pattern. "I say we should have dinner together tonight." he pokes the tip of my nose after he speaks. What does he see in me?
"No thanks," I say. "I don't no you, at all. I'm not interested in that at the time-"
"What's wrong? Did the Stiffs get to you?" he says, teasing. "I should've known the Stiffs would come to get us all one day." he seems angry with Abnegation for, I don't know, 'breaking me', I guess.
"I haven't spoken to an Abnegation in years, and all I did was help them find their classroom." I say, he'll ask more questions. "I'm not in the mood to reveal personal information to a stranger."
"Well, aren't you a fancy talker." he pokes my nose again. "I just want to get to know you and you sure seem-"
"Stop that." I order.
"Stop what?" he pokes my nose again, then reaches for my arm.
I bat him away. "Quit flirting with me." somehow, my voice has managed to keep steady for this long. Dauntless must already be having an affect on me.
"Feisty." he places his hand on my shoulder.
I grab his arm, digging my nails into it. "Don't touch me." my voice is low. He takes his arm back, I release it. "Get away from me." I don't know why I don't yell, yelling might scare myself less then this.
He backs away slowly, keeping his eyes on my face, but avoiding my eyes. He looks away. My eyebrows relax, I guess they were lowered as I spoke to him.
I turn back to the world going past me, I lean outside the doorway to see people jumping onto the roof. They're jumping. "Get ready to jump!" I announce.
"Why?" a female voice questions. "You're Candor, we don't have to listen to you."
"Then be factionless, everyone else is jumping." my voice lowering again. I'm starting to like having my voice lowered, it gives me this feeling of power.
"What?! Are you kidding me?" the girl says.
I prepare myself for the jump, I have to within the next thirty second, or else there won't be any roof left to land on. I back up, the other people in the train car make room for me to run and jump. I keep my mind clear of thoughts as I run to the edge of the car and leap. I hear 'oohs' behind me, just as I land I hear screams and thumps as the others jump.
My clothes have a few small holes in them from the rocks on the roof. I get up and make my way to the initiates crowded around a hole in the roof. I still don't see anyone wearing black and white. I guess I'm the only Candor in Dauntless initiation this year.
Someone at the front of the crowd begins speaking. "Congratulations initiates, I expected there to be more Candor than Erudite joining this year. I'm surprised from the absence of any Candor this year, well, we'll do just fine without them. So-"
"Actually," I say, the crowd moves so I can see the speaker and he can see me. They all stare. "You won't have to deal without any Candor this year, because, as you can see, you have one."
The speaker smirks, he has a few face piercings, though, I don't feel like counting. "Just one, huh?" He begins to walk towards me. "I hope you're not a Candor smart-mouth as we normally get, every year."
"I'm not a smart-mouth, you won't have that issue with me." my voice lowers again. "I didn't come here to annoy all of you."
"How nice of you." he continues to walk towards me until he is so close to me I can see the holes in his face the piercings had made. "Sure you're not from Amity?"
"Unless I stole these clothes and grew up with actors, then I 'm sure."
"Well, I'm glad, you've already grown out of you're old faction."
"Feel like I almost never lived there." Dauntless has to be molding me into one of their own, quicker than everyone else.
He leans closer to my face, "Good." the crowd behind him gasps. For what reason? They'll get talks from Dauntless members as well, harsher one's would be my guess. He begins to walk back to front of the crowd, I follow him about half way there, the reason I do so, was never chosen. "So, you all may be wondering what the giant hole in the roof is for." My eyes trail to gap in the cement to his right. "There is only one way to get in this building, any ideas?"
An Erudite boy beside me raises his hand, the man at the front of the room nods. "Jumping?" his voice squeaks. He winces after speaking, I don't think he'll last long.
"Correct, Erudite." the speaker scans the group of initiates. "Well, someone's got to go first, who's it going to be?" he doesn't sound curious.
I step forward.
"Hey, it's the 'Jerk', let'sgive her a round of applause!" a male voice suggests behind me. 'Jerk' is Dauntless slang for Candor, just as 'Stiff' and 'Nose' are for Abnegation and Erudite.
"Sure, sure. Give me a nice applause, 'Nose'." I say, I know it was an Erudite because the Dauntless don't randomly give people an applause. Suggesting it isn't even their thing.
I hear a few pairs of hands clapping behind me. I step closer to the hole and stare down it, I see thick lines all over the ground down there. It's a net. I look behind me to be sure everyone's looking. I see the Dauntless boy that was flirting with me on the train, he winks. I snort angrily. I look back at the bottom. They wouldn't just kill us, it's got to be a net. I bend my knees and jump, my arms flailing as I fall, my white jacket flying up and off of my body. Then, I hit the net. A few seconds after I land, my jacket falls down over my face. I grab it and throw it to the side of the net.
I look around, I just see rope and a hand. A hand? I extend my arm so I can reach it, the hand grabs my arm and pulls me out of the net and onto the floor. I see a boy, the one attached to the hand, he's handsome. His eyes are light brown, he has dark brown hair, and tan skin.
"I could hear Zach up there talking about no Candor this year. You the only one?" he says his voice seems to be naturally low. He straightens, his jacket shuffles as his arms and shoulders move.
"Yes. As far as I know. Unless there all hiding behind the Dauntless, though, that would never happen." I say.
"What's your name?"
I don't know why I hesitate. I don't want people to know who I am yet, though. Maybe I can figure out a name on the spot.
"Is that a hard one?" he asks. "Pick a new one if you want, but make it good."
A Dauntless name should help me remake myself better than another Candor one. "Jade." I say. I like it, it's Dauntless, it's short, and easy to remember. I now go by Jade Thorn, though, I should avoid saying my last name so no-one does their research, I am surrounded by Erudite in initiation.
"First jumper, Jade-Candor!" he yells to the hole. He nods at me reaching behind me to usher me out of the other initiates' way, "welcome to Dauntless."
