I gasp, shock stabs my chest, a cold ache spreads over me. She can't be the cause of this war, I don't believe it.
"Christine." I say quietly.
"What?" Lamar whispers. I feel his breaths on my neck.
"My sister." I whisper to him. "She started this war."
There is a brief silence. "Let's go, maybe you can get her to stop it."
"Okay." I whisper. Lamar and I walk quietly through Erudite head quarters, somehow un-noticed. The walls are all white marble, it's hard to tell where we're going.
After a while, I hear her talking, debating almost, maybe she hasn't lost everything she was taught back in Candor.
Then, I understand what she's saying. After a moment, I whisper to Lamar, "stop, I hear her." He stops.
"So, what do you think of Stella switching to Dauntless?" It's my brother's voice. I look around for pictures of him- I don't see any.
"It was illogical." I hear my sister say. "She's smart, you know that, but that was the worst decision she's ever made. I'm sure she's faction-less now, I doubt she survived the first stage."
I tense up at her words. I've proved her wrong. How dare she say that to our brother?
"Agreed." I hear my brother say.
"Should we see if she's there tomorrow?" Her voice suddenly full of concern. Why is she concerned about me? I'm sixteen, I can take care of myself, I don't need her help.
"Should we have checked before starting the war?"
"Probably, but the faction-less don't do anything, she'll still be there."
I look at Lamar. "I'm done listening to them." I whisper. "What should we do?"
"We need to get in there." He whispers. "Before anyone sees us."
I nod. I look around for a door- I see one, a few yards away and to the right. "I see a door." I point at it. "Do you think that's it?" My siblings' conversation goes on, but I don't care what they have to say about me- none of it matters to me.
"Yeah, let's go" He whispers. I look around, no-one has noticed us yet. Lamar and I run towards the door, our shoes smacking against the floor- but I don't care, I just want to get to my siblings. We push through the door, holding our guns up.
I see my sister, then my brother, both staring at us.
"Stella." Christine says. She rises from her seat and walks towards me, her arms open to hug me.
"I heard what you two said, I got tired of listening to your insults." I say. "Sit down." My voice is low and demanding.
"What right do you have to talk to me like that?" Christine crosses her arms.
"Well," I say. "I have this loaded gun in my hand and Dauntless initiation trainer standing right next to me. Thought that was enough to convince you." I say. "Now, sit down."
"You don't know who he is." Mathew says. He stands up.
"I do know who he is." I look at both of them, how they think they have all the power over me and always have. "What don't you understand by sit down?"
"What don't you understand by we're more important, you can't kill us and won't." Christine says.
"You may know who he is." I glance at Lamar. "But you don't know who I am, you have no power over me anymore. You can't tell me what to do."
"Sure we can." Mathew says. I feel a sharp pain in my neck, the same pain as when I was injected with the simulation syrum. I clutch my neck. I look at Lamar, his expression says simulation syrum. "Follow orders." He says.
"You think that'll work on us?" I say without thinking.
"You're Divergent." Christine says. "Both of you." She looks at Lamar. "We have the syrum for you."
"No." Mathew says. "Not Stella." He walks up to me and takes the gun from my hands.
"Mathew, give it back." I glare at him.
He raises it to aim at me. He won't shoot me, he can't. I grab Lamar's hand. He can't kill me. I see him squeeze the trigger. My hand slips from Lamar's. I hear screams and Lamar yelling as I fall to the ground.
