Lamar and I jump off the train after everyone else. Everything in Candor looks so familiar, yet so foreign to me. The white and black clothes make time rewind, I feel like it's the day of the aptitude test again, but it isn't. That day should be behind me- far behind me- but I still feel the need to decide if I'm Candor or Dauntless.
The black and white clothes also remind me of my parents, I need to find them before their house is searched, or they're killed.
"We need to find my parents." I say to Lamar.
"Where's your house?" He asks me.
I remember where we are and where my parents' house is.
"A few hundred yards," I say. "To the right."
"Let's go." He says. We march in the dirrection of my house. After a few minutes I see it and can't controll myself. I run towards it, without a thought about. "Stella, stop." Lamar says quietly, I know I should, but I can't, I'm so close to them, I need to see them- now. I feel a hand wrap around my arm- Lamar's hand. "Is that it?" He is breathing hevily.
I notice he is pointing at it, my parents' home, I'm so close to seeing them again. Maybe this is all a dream- or just a simulation- that I chose Dauntless, that I met and fell in love with Lamar, that I faced one of my childhood fears, that I was ranked first, What if when I open that door I wake up back in my bedroom, the day of the Choosing Cerimony, determind to choose Dauntless? That can't be true, I've been through too much for it to all be a dream. Too much for one simulation. Too much for anything but life, the life I'm living right now. It has to be real.
"Lamar." I say. My voice somehow steady.
"Yeah?" He says.
"Is this real?" I ask.
"Yes, everything, it isn't a dream." He says as if he had read my mind.
"Thank you." I say. He doesn't reply. When I am close enough, I wrap my hand around the door-nob and turn it. I push against the door and step in, almost falling down. "Mom? Dad?" I call, expecting them to come running down the stairs to me, but I was wrong.
"They can't have already searched here, it's too far." Lamar says. I feel him behind me and hear the door squeak as he nearly closes it. "There's no-one around."
I run up the stairs. "Mom! Dad!" I almost scream in frustration. Why aren't they calling back? Like Lamar said, no-one could have searched here already. I run through the hallway, opening every door to see if they're in any of the rooms. They can't have killed themselves, they wouldn't have, and no-one could've killed them.
I close the last door and turn around to see Lamar standing right behind me. "I didn't find anyone. They could've left, expecting an attack."
"If they had expected the attack they wouldn't have just left, exsposing themselves to everyone." I say. I look up at him, into his eyes. They show no emotion, but I'm sure he can read worry in mine.
"We'll find them." His hand rests on my shoulder. "We need to go, there could be leaders around here now." I nod. We run down the stairs and to the door, slowing down as we inched closer.
Lamar and I walk out of my parents' house and walk away. Then, I see Zach and Steve, standing side by side, holding guns, waiting to find a Divergent. They watch everyone walk by them, studying their every movement. When they see Lamar and I, Zach throws his arm in front of Lamar.
"Well." Zach says. "Not so amazing now, are you Storm?" He looks at me, I stare at Lamar's back. "You can go." Zach points at me.
"She doesn't understand you." Steve says. "Their brains don't process things the same way." Steve walks around Lamar to look at me. "It doesn't matter if she's here, she won't hurt us."
"What if she's Divergent?" Zach says. "What if she's acting and will kill us any minute now?"
"Well kill her, you won't have to worry about it then." My heart is racing. They can't kill me, right? But what can I do? If I move they'll kill me, if I don't move I'll still die.
Zach aims his gun at my head, I know I'm breathing fast, and I'm sure he notices. "She is." He presses the gun to my head pushes my head. "Come on, I know you are, just show me."
My vision blurs, not from tears, but thoughts of what I could do. I could elbow him or grab the gun. But, I know if I move, Zach will fire, and I'll be dead.
Suddenly, Lamar is facing me, his gun aimed at Zach's head, and Steve's gun aimed at his. I grab my gun and raise it to face Steve's head and I duck. I hear a gunshot and something fall to the ground, Steve is on the ground, likely dead.
"Come on, Storm. I thought we were friends." Zach's voice is low. "She just made me kill Steve and you're aiming that gun at me?"
"She didn't make you do anything." Lamar says, his voice is also low. "She ducked and you still fired. Now, drop the gun."
"I doubt either of you would shoot me, I'm too important, and I can help you."
Lamar looks at me and nods. I don't know what he's trying to tell me. I aim my gun at Zach's chest. "You don't think so?" I ask Zach.
"Nope, I don't expect you to do anything, you might as well lower the gun now and run." He says.
I lower the gun, not completely though, I galnce at Lamar, his expression blank. Then, I notice that my gun is aimed at Zach's leg. I squeeze the trigger and step back, so does Lamar. Zach yells something, I don't hear him and I don't care what he has to say to me.
"Run!" Lamar yells at me. I turn around and run. I don't know where I'll go or if he'll be behind me, but all I care about is if we'll see each other again.
