After the rest of the initiates jump, we are introduced to our instructor . . .
"My name is Storm, I'll be your initiation instructor for the next few weeks," he pauses, looking at me, likely expecting a comment as any other Candor would do. "This is where we separate, Dauntless-born, you're with Stephanie, transfers you're with me. Follow me." he motions us to follow him, we walk into a large area enclosed with cement. "This is the Pit, you'll learn to love it one day and I suggest that day be soon. You need to let go of your old factions, there's no going back." Storm then takes us to a platform, with railings on each side of the the edges of concrete. "This is the Chasm, it reminds us that there is a fine line between bravery and idiocy, one daredevil jump will end your life. It's happened before, and it'll likely happen again, you've all been warned." Storm turns around so he's walking backwards and looking at the group, most of us are ex-Erudite. There are 13 of us total, 12 Erudite, one Candor. Nine Dauntless-born initiates. "The first stage of initiation is training, you'll be firing guns, throwing knifes, and fighting each other."
"Wait-" an Erudite boy says, the one that stood next to me on the roof. "Fighting each other?"
"Yes," Storm says, "you'll be fighting each other. Are you scared? If so, I'm going to have to ask you to leave, if you can't handle the motioning the first stage you certainly won't be able to handle stage three."
The Erudite boy is shaking, "I'm okay," he says, his voice cracks, I'm surprised he didn't crumble to the floor judging by the way his knees are shaking.
"Sure you are," I hear Storm mumble. He continues explaining, "stage two will test your mental strength, there is no way to prepare for it, stage three is a combination of the first two stages, in stage three you will enter your fear-landscape." he pauses, again, looking at me. "Got anything to say Candor?"
"No." I say, I'm glad my voice doesn't crack.
Storm looks me in the eye, I do the same, "I see you've grown out of your old faction quickly."
"Yes, I have." I walk towards him and turn around, "I want you all to quit calling me by my old faction or the slang for it. I'm not Candor anymore so quit treating me like it." Everyone stares as I rejoin the group and turn back around. Storm doesn't look mad, I look into his eyes again, they're un-readable.
"I see you've started trying to be brave, what's your secret?" I feel like his are words digging under my skin, searching for my past, I shake my head briefly.
I look back into his eyes, "I don't think." I say, though, I'm lying. I convince myself to do whatever it is I have to do, knowing that if I don't', I'll regret it.
Storm smirks. "I can tell." he turns away from the group of initiates. "Tomorrow you will all begin gun firing and knife throwing, one week from tomorrow, you will begin fighting. I will go into to details of stage two after the last fight two weeks from tomorrow." Storm shoves his hands into his pockets. " You will be ranked at the end of stage one, cut will be made then, only four out of both you and the Dauntless-born." I hear a few gasps behind me as Storm comes to a stop after we enter a large room filled with beds and stalls with shower heads noticeable behind the doors. "This is where you will be sleeping for the next several weeks. Make your selves comfortable. Dinner is at 7, if you want to eat before tomorrow, I suggest you attend." Storm exits the room, I notice above the door-way is a sign labeled 'DORMITORY'. That sign must either be for the initiates, the new initiation instructors, or for everyone, maybe the Dauntless are forgetful.
I sit down on a bed closest to one of the stalls, "this one is mine." I announce, an Erudite girl with long blond hair hands me a blue permanent marker. "Thank you." I say. I begin writing my name on the side of the bed, the door of the stall next to my bed, and the night-stand to the left of my bed. I return the marker to the Erudite girl and get ready for dinner, it is 6:45 according to my watch.
