"Are you ready?" Lamar asks me, I am about to go through my first simulation. Lamar has a needle like the one he used to inject us with to go through his fear-landscape.

I nod. "Okay." He says. I feel him inject me with the syrum, I stare into his eyes, then I am gone.

I open my eyes, I'm on a roof-top, it is rising, fast. I stand up, the wind is blowing me around, I fall to my hands and knees, the roof-top is still rising.

"Stop!" I yell. I mean 'stop rising'. It keeps shooting to the sky. I crawl over to the edge of the building. I look over it, I try to focus on the ladder in front of me. I turn around and lay my feet on a rung, I step down so I can get my hands on the side of the ladder. I climb down as fast as I can, trying to dodge the gusts of wind.

My foot slips off the rung. I scream. I try to pull my foot back to the ladder, the more I try, the farther away my foot gets. My other foot slides off the ladder. I am breathing very quickly now, I feel my heart racing in my throat. I swallow hard and grip the ladder as hard as I can.

The wind pulls me to the side, my knuckles bright white, I won't last much longer. It isn't real. I inhale sharply and loosen my grip, I begin to slide down the ladder, the wind pulls my feet down, I rest them on a rung and climb down then, the simulation ends.

I gasp and sit up. Lamar's hand is on my shoulder. "Calm down, it's over." I look at him, breathing through my mouth.

After a few moments I am calm enough to speak. "How long was I in there?"

"Three minutes and 22 seconds." His hand falls from my shoulder.

        "Really?"

He nods. "Go back to my apartment, I'll be there in about an hour, depending how long it takes two more initiates to go through their first simulation."

"Okay." I get up and walk towards the door, and leave. I make sure no-one is following me on the way to Lamar's apartment. The door is locked, he must have left a key for me some-where. I look down to the bottom of the door, he has no 'welcome' mat. I look at the top of the door frame. I don't see anything. I stand on my toes and reach for the top of the frame. My fingers pick up dust as I move them, they slide over something- something metal. I push it closer to me, it's a key. I grab it and unlock the door. I push the door open and close it behind me, locking it again.
