I open my eyes to the sound of distant gun firing. Darkness is all around me. I feel a body next to mine, both of us in a pool of blood. I look around, it's Lamar next to me.

"Lamar." I say, my voice weak.

"You're awake." He says. "He only shot you in the shoulder."

"That explains all the blood." I say. "Where are we?"

"I don't know, they knocked me out before we got here. I woke up about a half hour ago." He says. " I heard them talking, planning on what to do with us."

"Let me guess, killing both of us."

"No." He sighs a little. "Keeping you here to heal, and sending me back to the control room, under a simulation."

There is a long silence. "Stella." I feel his hand wrapped around my arm. He shakes it.

"I'm still here." I say. "They won't do that, I won't let them."

"What can you do about it? Neither of us have weapons. Besides, they're your siblings."

"I'm not sure I care anymore." I pause. "They shot me and locked us up here. They're certainly not treating me like we're related."

"What'll you do then? They probably already hate me for even coming here with you and won't change their minds on what to do with me."

"They just want to use you to hurt me. I'm sure they don't want me dead, they just want me to follow orders."

"You think they'll keep us both alive just so we follow orders?" He says. "I don't think that's what it's about. They probably think they can use me to keep everything running if I'm under a strong enough simulation. They said something about a simulation serum for Divergents. They'll use me as an experiment, if it works, what can we do?"

"They'll use it on me when I heal so I do what they want me to." I say. "They could be doing both, hurting me by using you. I can't believe a whole faction follows them."

Then, there's a ray of light across the floor, a door opening. "You woke up early." A familiar voice says- Christine. "Now, let's see if this serum works."

Light surrounds me now, other than our clothes, everything is white. I see her- Christine- a thin needle in her hand. I try to stand up, but I feel too weak. The blood loss and deep ache in my arms keep me down. Lamar stands up easily, he looks down at me. His eyes seem to be asking for an answer.

        "Get her." I whisper weakly.

"What was that, Stella? Too weak to speak loudly? Sorry, about that." Christine says. Her eyes shift from Lamar to me. "I'm sorry, about all of this. I know he heard Mathew's plans, I don't agree with them, but he knows what this faction wants, and they want all Divergents dead or working for us."

I grab Lamar's wrist. I feel a sudden wave of guilt. It's Mathew that wants us dead.

"What do you want?" I say weakly, staring at her.

"Answers." She says. "Answers to the questions I've asked. Especially this one."

Christine moves the needle closer to Lamar's neck, I let go of his wrist just before he ducks and flings his leg out. Christine falls, the needle slipping from her hand. Her head knocks against the ground, a wave of vibration explodes around the room.

I hear Lamar say. "Let's go."

I try to push myself to my feet, a sharp pain bolts to my shoulder. I groan. Lamar gently grabs my arm and pulls me up. Once I am on my feet, he bends down and grabs the needle, slipping it into his jacket pocket.

Sudden dizziness washes over me. "Lamar." I say weakly.

I fall. "Stella!" He nearly yells. My vision is blurry. He drops to the floor. "Stella, wake up."

        "I'm awake, Lamar. I'm okay." I say.

"No, Stella, you fell over just standing up." He says. "The blood loss." He is quiet. He yanks the arm of his jacket forward, and rips a strip of it off. "It looks like the bullet only grazed the side of your shoulder." He wraps the strip of his jacket around my shoulder. "This should slow your blood loss down, soon." He tightens the strap. "You okay?"

        I nod. "Let's go." I say.
