The sight of the waves moving around the ship was everything Rhaenys could see from the window in her cabin, land barely visible since they were staying far away from it.
She wished she could have gone out to feel the fresh air against her face, the ocean-smelling wind which she had never gotten to experience before.
But she knew she couldn't risk it. She had made sure that Varys and their little birds would keep any whispers of the Dragon Queen away from Cersei's ears for a reason. If she was to be seen this close to the Crownlands by any of her spies, it would be difficult to avoid her finding out. She would not jeopardize her plan just to be outside in the wind.
Hearing her children cry out, the woman turned back to them with a smile on her face, "I see you're all awake now."
The dragons were all bundled up together on her bed, their eyes moving to their mother and they screeched again. The direwolves beside them going back to sleep once they knew there was no danger.
She knew that Lady and Nymeria were loyal creatures just like their brothers, but it warmed her heart to see them being so protective over her children. It felt as if she still had the Starks with her in a way. All of them still by her side, living carefree and innocent to the horrors of the real world.
However, Robb was now the King in the North and was leading an army against the Lannisters. Sansa's image of a perfect prince was shattered. Arya had vanished into the night. Brandon and Rickon were miles away in Winterfell. Lady Catelyn mourned them all. Lord Eddard was dead after his name was destroyed. And Jon... her Jon was on the other side of the Wall with no idea of what was currently happening.
They were all separated now and had to find their own way to survive until they could meet again.
Shaking off the sadness enveloping her heart, she went to the dragon babies and placed them on the table where a plate of shredded meat was awaiting them. Another plate which had had bigger pieces now empty since the wolves already ate it. The pieces were small enough that the dragons could easily chew them down, but they were still uncooked.
"I have read about dragons but I'm not sure how much of it is trustable..." sighed Rhaenys as she leaned closer to the table and put a piece in front of them, "Dracarys."
The dragons tilted their heads at first but then shot small flames from their mouths directly at the meat.
She let out a breath of awe, chuckling a little and stroked their tiny heads with her fingers. The children leaning nearer, their eyes closing like cats to feel her touch more.
"Now you should be able to at the very least eat on your own." she rose from her place and took three more pieces so that there would be four in the table, one for each of them.
The four continued eating after burning the meat, their flames still too small to cause any damage so Rhaenys wasn't worried about them causing a fire or destroying the table they were on.
Then, a knock came from the door, the Targaryen letting the person come in once she heard Ron announce his name.
The stag walked to her side with a couple of small notes in hand, gazing at the dragons in still disbelief. Not like anyone could blame him since other than the mother, everyone else who saw the extinct species couldn't believe his or her eyes either no matter how many times they saw them.
"To think that they will one day be able to obliterate a whole city all on their own..." he muttered before turning to the woman who was watching him in amusement and she asked, "What news did you receive?"
Clearing his throat, he passed her the letters, "My brother Renly has organized a tourney in the Stormlands. All his allies are present with him. While my other brother Stannis is sailing there with his newest pirate army and the Red Priestess. Lord Tyrion has also sent Janos Slynt to the Night's Watch."
