The heat in Flash's car was blasting as he drove you towards downtown at night. Although it was snowing on the highway, he didn't worry. His fingers were intertwined with yours between you both. Christmas music played softly from the radio and the air smelled faintly of the cocoa inside of the cups placed in the cup holders.
"Thank you for today," you said softly, giving his fingers a light squeeze.
"You're welcome, babe," he murmured. He squeezed back. "I love you." He paused and chuckled. "And I'm sorry for spilling hot cocoa on your top."
You giggled. "S'okay," you said. "I love you too. At least the cocoa wasn't hot."
"Yeah, but I totally stained that sweater!" He glanced at you for a minute. "Ugh, and it's the lavender one you love."
"It's fine," you assured him, and you nudged him with your shoulder. "You can just buy me a new one..."
He grinned. "I'll buy a dozen sweaters for you, babe."
"Only a dozen?"
He laughed loudly. At the same time, the car let out a wheezing noise and began to slow to a crawl.
"What the-"
You looked at him nervously and then at the line of traffic behind you. Someone honked and screamed out of their window. "Flash-"
"I know," he hissed. "Crap!" He turned the wheel and let the car inch its way to the side of the road. It came to a stop before it could park straight. "Oh, shoot, my dad is gonna-" He placed his hands in his hair and groaned. "Did I break the car? Did I break it? Oh my gosh, I totally broke it-"
"Hey, babe," you said, reaching over and putting the car in park. "Stop it. I'm sure we can-"
He held a hand up to silence you. His voice was filled with anger and worry. "___, do you remember what happened when I let Spider-Man take the car? My dad freaking-"
"Babe," you said. "Chill out. Let's look under the hood and see what's wrong. Also, you didn't let Spider-Man take the car, he just took it. And stop stressing!"
He stared at you, hands tight on the wheel. He set his jaw and nodded. "Okay, I'll go look. Stay put." He undid his belt and opened his door.
"Be careful," you called. You watched as he walked to the front of the car and lifted the hood. The snow came down a little harder.
A few minutes later, Flash walked by and got in the car. His cheeks were flushed and his nose was running. He had snow all in his hair.
"What's wrong with it?" you asked.
"I don't know," he said, voice strained. "I'm calling someone."
"Good," you said. "You don't need to stress about this."
He ignored you, grabbed his phone out of his coat pocket, and dialed a number. He was redirected to another number, then finally heard the sound of a deep, gruff voiced man.
"Hello. Yes. Um, I'm just off of exit thirty-seven and my car broke down. No, it won't budge but everything else is working fine. Yes. No. Yes. Yes. Maybe? I don't know. No. Okay, thank you." His voice was calm, but when he hit end, he slammed the phone down into one of the cup holders, making you jump.
And when you jumped, he looked at you with wide, dread filled eyes and then dropped his face into his hands. He cried out in annoyance and moved his fingers to his hair.
"I'm so sorry," he mumbled.
"Flash," you began.
"No," he said. "Don't start." He lifted his head and leaned over to turn the volume dial on the radio.
You frowned at him. You hated that this had ruined your date.
"Are they coming?"
"Yup," he said shortly. The sound of You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch trailed off into a commercial.
You pressed your lips together. "How long?"
"Thirty minutes or more," he said.
"Oh."
The commercial about last minute Christmas shopping ended. The beginning of Baby It's Cold Outside began to play. A smile played at your lips and you leaned over to turn it up.
"It's our song," you told him.
He looked over at you and smiled. He couldn't help it; the grin on your face was so gleeful. "How is it our song?" he asked.
"It's cold outside," you said, "and you don't want me to go away, do you?"
He lifted an arm up and placed it around your shoulders. You leaned against him and he laid his head against yours. "No," he said sweetly. "No, I don't want you to ever go away."
I wish I knew how - Your eyes are like starlight now
To break this spell - I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell
He kissed the top of your head. "Babe, I'm sorry this happened."
You scoffed. "Please. Thirty minutes of us cuddling in the snow? I love it," you said. You looked out the window. "Look how pretty it is."
"It's gorgeous," he agreed, "but I made you jump and-"
"Flash," you said. "Don't start."
He smiled when you gave him a smirk that reflected his own. You kissed his cheek and then moved your lips to capture his for a brief, single moment. He pressed his mouth against yours.
When you broke away, you left your skin against his. His face was still colder than yours from being outside.
"I've got to get home," you half sang in a soft voice.
He snickered as he mocked the deep voice on the radio. "Oh, baby, you'll freeze out there..."
You giggled. "Say, lend me your coat-"
"It's up to your knees out there-"
"You've really been grand!" you sang.
"Thrill when you touch my hand," he said, and he intertwined his fingers with yours.
"Why don't you see-"
He turned his face towards yours so his nose brushed up against yours. Your face scrunched up in a smile and he sighed lovingly, feeling oh so in love with you.
"How can you do this thing to me?" he murmured, and he kissed you again, chaste and soft, and pulled back, dreading the moment the repair guys would come to fix the car and tear them from this moment.
Baby it's cold outside
