The next day at school, you sat beside Peter at lunch, your hand in his. A quiet conversation between the two of you was interrupted by the sound of Ned's sudden, excited babbling.
"Guys, guys, guys, you'll never guess what I got, guys guys guys-"
Peter raised his head, eyes wide. "What is it, Ned?" he asked, slightly annoyed.
The boy sat down in the chair across from you and pulled out three tickets with purple ink. He grinned.
"Three tickets to the scariest haunted house attraction in Queens," he said.
Peter gaped, snatching one of the tickets. "No way!"
"Uh-huh."
"That's awesome," he continued. "Oh my gosh, dude!"
"I know." Ned couldn't stop grinning. "And best part is that we can all three go tonight!"
"Yes-" Peter said, then he stopped. He looked at you, who were still quiet. "Wait. No. I can't."
Ned's smile wiped off his face. "What?"
"I can't," he repeated, pushing the ticket back across the table. "___ doesn't like scary and we have plans."
"Oh no, Peter-" you started.
He looked at you. "If I want to keep up this best boyfriend ever stuff, I need to spend time with you."
"But that doesn't mean you have to drop your friends and cancel plans you really want to have," you said. "A year ago you would have jumped up and down at the idea of free haunted house tickets."
"A year ago I wasn't dating you," he responded.
You pressed your lips together. Maybe it was ridiculous, and you'd never tell Peter, but you feared he would resent you as his girlfriend if you made him change too much. Before you were dating him, he didn't care that much to cancel plans with you for Ned. And now-
"Peter, you're going," you insisted.
"No," he said. "I'm not going anywhere without you! I made a promise."
"You never promised me-"
"I promised myself," he said. "I want to be better for you. I can't keep acting like we're just friends-"
"Okay," Ned interrupted. "There are three tickets. If you don't go, Peter, I don't have anyone else to bring."
"He's going," you said.
"Only if you go," he replied.
You looked at him seriously.
"Come on, I'll protect you," he said.
"Peter-"
"___," he said, tilting his head. He gave you a look of sparkling, big brown eyes and a kind smile. On top of that, he squeezed your hand, reminding you that all was good in the world. "I'll protect you, I promise."
You pressed your lips together. "Does protect mean you'll carry me through the entire thing and let me keep my eyes closed?"
"Yes," he said.
"Okay. Fine."
He grinned. "Oh, yes!"
"So it's settled then? Good." Ned sighed. "You guys get on my nerves."
You looked back down at your lunch and opened your bag of favorite chips. Peter squeezed your wrist and gave you a soft smile.
"Hey, we've still got season two of Stranger Things to binge watch," he said, "so we can do that to make up for the haunted house."
