"You should've been there, ___!" Ned exclaimed, waving his hands around animatedly. "Pete just punched him right in the jaw! He lost three teeth. They fell out right on the ground. Of course, Peter just had to stop and apologize to him, even though the guy had just tried to rob this old lady at gunpoint..."
Peter grimaced and blushed, turning his head away from you. You looked up at him and smiled with adoration.
"Look, I hit him a little too hard, okay?" he mumbled. Ned rolled his eyes.
You giggled. "Aw, Pete. I think that's cute." He smiled to himself as you reached up and kissed his cheek.
Peter looked at you, widening his smile.
"Who's that guy staring at us?" Ned asked.
You and Peter followed Ned's gaze to the end of the hallway, where a tall, pale, dark haired kid was staring at you. Peter shrugged.
"I dunno-"
But you knew. "Hey, it's Adam!"
You broke out into a run. Peter furrowed his eyebrows as you hugged the boy, both of you beaming. What was his girlfriend doing hugging that random guy?
Jealousy panged in his chest.
As if you realized what you were doing, you pulled away and tucked a lock of hair behind your ear. You looked at Ned and Peter and waved them over. They slowly made their way towards you.
"Guys, this is Adam," you said. "From my old school. In Brooklyn. He was my best friend for, like, three years." You nudged him. "I haven't seen you in months! What are you doing here?"
"I missed seeing you in person, and I was in the city, so why not?"
Ned glanced at Peter with wide eyes at the word missed. Peter set his jaw tight. Clearing his throat, Ned stepped forward and shook Adam's hand.
"Hi, I'm Ned," he said.
"Nice to meet you," he said.
It was Peter's turn. He took Adam's hand and gave it one quick shake. "Peter."
"Nice to meet you," Adam said. "Wow. Strong grip."
"So, what's up?" you asked.
"I thought I'd hang out with you today, catch up and stuff, if that's cool," he said. "I've only been texting you for months now. It's good to actually talk to you in person!"
Peter blanched. You were texting him?
"Oh, sure! Yeah, definitely. Um," you said, jerking your thumb towards the boys on either side of you, "we were about to go to a diner for some dinner. You wanna come?"
"That would be great, actually," he said.
"It's cool if he comes, right guys?" you asked Ned and Peter.
"Sure," Ned replied, smiling.
"It's totally cool," Peter lied. He curled his hands into fists when Adam placed a hand on your arm.
"Great. Is there an ATM near here? I need some cash," he said.
"Sure. Um, Ned, can you take him to the one down the street? I'll meet you two there." You smiled warmly. As Ned nodded and walked alongside Adam, you stepped towards Peter and grabbed his arm. "Pete."
"What?" he asked.
"I just wanted to apologize," you said, looking down. "I hugged him and it wasn't right for me to- cause you and I are- and I can't just..." You trailed off with a sigh. "Point is that I'm sorry. It was just a friendly thing, okay? I had a thing for Adam back in the day-"
